CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-EIGHTEEN-1
HAILEY
Liam’s little vampire girlfriend was coming over for dinner tonight. After several convincing on the need to be open minded, and me giving him the talk on being safe and smart, not just physically, but with his heart too. We had agreed to get to know this girl. The boy was relentless in his pursuit, I had to respect that. He was fighting for what he wanted. A lesson I’d taught him well.
The house was in a state of controlled chaos. Aria, in a surprising turn of events, had appointed herself as the official decorator. She was flitting around the living room, arranging throw pillows and lighting scented candles.
“The lavender is too calming,” she declared, snuffing out a candle with a dramatic flourish. “We need something more… neutral. Something that says ‘we’re a welcoming family, but we will also tear you limb from limb if you hurt my brother.’
Liam having heard that, turned and glared at his little sister.
“Aria! You don’t say things like that. It is weird and you will definitely scare her away.” I said, trying to hide
my smile. The girl had a flair for the dramatic, that’s for sure.
Dominic, ever the calm in the storm, was sitting in his armchair, a book in his lap, a silent observer to the
madness.
“Let her have her fun,” he said, without looking up from his book. “It’s keeping her out of trouble.”
I had to admit, he had a point. I was just glad she was on our side. Mostly.
Just then, the doorbell rang. A hush fell over the room. Aria froze, a pillow halfway to the couch. Liam, who had been pretending to be nonchalant, straightened up, his posture suddenly rigid.
I took a deep breath, smoothing down my dress. “Okay, everyone. Play nice.”
I walked to the door, my heart pounding in my chest. I could feel the nervous energy radiating from my family. We were a pack, a unit, and right now, we were facing a threat. Or, at least, a little potential threat.

queaked out. “I’m Emilia. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”
e was soft, melodic, with a hint of a nervous tremor. She was holding a small, beautifully wrapped box in her hands. And she was looking at me with a look of pure, unadulterated adoration. Like she was meeting a celebrity.
“Hi, Emilia,” I said, my own voice a little too bright. “I’m Hailey. Liam’s mom. Please, come in.”
She stepped inside, her movements fluid and graceful I could feel the power radiating from her, a quiet
ancient energy that was fascinating. She was a vampire, through and through
“This is for you,” she said, holding out the box. It was a box of artisanal chocolates, from a fancy shop in
the city. I had to give it to her, the girl had good taste.
“Thank you, Emilia. That’s very thoughtful of you.” I said, taking the box. “Liam Emilia’s here
Liam came into the foyer, a nervous smile on his face. “Hey,” he said, his voice soft. He looked at her, and in that moment, I saw it. The same look Dominic used to give me. The same look of awe and wonder. And I knew. This wasn’t just a crush. This was real.
