CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-SEVENTEEN-3
“Hey,” she said, her tone gentle. “It’s going to be okay, Hailey. Liam is a smart kid. He’s got your fire and Dom’s loyalty. He’s not going to let some vampire girl take advantage of him.”
“I know,” I said, but the words felt hollow. “It’s not just that, Val. It’s the… history. The baggage. I spent so many years fighting that war, trying to build a world where our kids wouldn’t have to. And now… it’s like it’s all coming back.”
She reached over, squeezing my hand. “Maybe it’s not coming back. Maybe it’s just… a reminder. A reminder of where we’ve been, and how far we’ve come. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a chance for things to be different this time. For a werewolf and a vampire to just… be. Without all the drama.”
I wanted to believe her. I really did. But the knot in my stomach refused to untie.
“What about you?” I asked, desperate to change the subject. “How are things with you and Giovanni? Still going strong?”
She grinned, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Stronger than ever. He’s still the most annoying, infuriating. handsome man I’ve ever met. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
I smiled, genuinely this time. I was happy for her. For them. They had found their own version of happily
ever after, a chaotic, messy, beautiful thing that was all their own.
My best friend and I didn’t get to see as often as we would have wanted, but it’s a good feeling knowing we were both living the dream life. We talked all night, about everything and anything. The house was filled with our laughter and the scent of wine and the warmth of a friendship that had withstood the test of time. For a few precious hours, I was just Hailey again. Not the Luna, not the mom, not the warrior. Just a girl, talking to her best friend.
The next morning, I woke up with a slight headache and a renewed sense of resolve. Valerie was right. I couldn’t let my past dictate my son’s future. I had to trust him.
I drove back to my house, the morning sun filtering through the trees, painting the world in shades of gold. The house was quiet when I walked in, but I could hear the faint sound of voices from the kitchen. I followed the sound, my heart swelling with a familiar warmth.
Dominic was at the stove, flipping pancakes, a spatula in his hand. Liam was sitting at the table, a cup of coffee in front of him, and Phoenix, Valerie’s son, was sitting across from him, engaged in a heated debate about some video game.
And then there was Aria. She was sitting at the table too, a book in her lap, but she wasn’t reading. She was watching her brother, a small, almost imperceptible smile on her face. It was a look of pure, unadulterated affection. And in that moment, I knew. Everything was going to be okay
“Morning,” I said, my voice still a little husky.
They all looked up, and a chorus of “Morning, Mom,” and “Morning, Aunt Hailey,” filled the room.
