Chapter 100

“That Rocco Blackwood is on a mission,” Andy said, his voice low as he sipped his tea and glanced at me over the rim of his cup. “He’s hunting down a group called the Triads. He’s convinced they’re behind your kidnapping and supposed death. According to my sources, he hasn’t left his office in days.”

I should have felt something—relief, perhaps, or a sense of justice that Rocco cared enough to seek revenge. But instead, I was numb. There was no spark of satisfaction, only a dull acceptance of the harsh truth.

“He’s looking in the wrong place,” I said quietly. “It wasn’t the Triads. It was Dr. Green and that woman with the mask. And Ethan—Ryan, or whatever his real name is.”

Andy raised an eyebrow. “The people you saw at the cliffs?”

I nodded, my fingers tracing the rim of my mug. “They all wore the same pendant—a triangle.”

Without a word, Andy set his cup down and slipped into the cabin. He returned moments later with a thick folder, which he opened on the table between us. “Since you mentioned the triangle pendants, I’ve been digging.” He spread out several photographs. “These were taken at various locations around here over the past year.”

I leaned in, studying the pictures. Faces both familiar and unknown stared back at me, each person wearing an identical triangular pendant around their neck.

“What is this? Some kind of cult?” I asked, a chill creeping up my spine.

“More like a secret society,” Andy replied. “From what I’ve gathered, they call themselves the Triads.”

My eyes locked onto one photo—Dr. Green standing beside a woman whose face was hidden in shadow. “This has to be tied to what happened to my father, and to Rocco’s sister.”

Andy’s expression grew darker. “And now they think you’re dead, which gives us some breathing room. But that advantage won’t last. These people have eyes everywhere. If they find out you survived…”

“They’ll come after me again,” I finished, the weight of the threat pressing down on me.

“That’s why I think you need to leave. Let me take you somewhere safe, far away from here.” His gaze was earnest, filled with concern. “You’re human now—vulnerable in ways you never were before. If they catch you—”

“I’d be defenseless,” I admitted, the truth hitting me anew. “No claws, no fangs, no enhanced strength or senses.” I rubbed my arms, goosebumps rising despite the warmth of the room. “I’m just prey now.”

“Exactly. And these people—whoever they are—have already shown they won’t stop for anything.” Andy leaned closer. “I have contacts in Canada. I could get you across the border tonight, set you up somewhere they’d never think to look.”

I stared into my tea, watching the steam curl lazily upward. The idea of running, hiding in some remote cabin while others fought my battles, made my stomach twist. But what choice did I have? In my current state, I was powerless to protect myself, let alone help my father or uncover the truth.
