Chapter 103

Kira’s Perspective

The night air hung thick and oppressive as I paced restlessly through the tiny garden nestled behind Andy’s cabin. Every few moments, my eyes darted to my watch, the knot in my stomach tightening with each passing minute. Andy should have returned long ago—he had promised to be back by nine after picking up my father from the hospital.

“Don’t worry,” he had said earlier that day, squeezing my shoulder with a confidence I desperately wanted to believe. “I have connections at the hospital. Your dad will be safe with me.”

That conversation had taken place around noon. Now, the clock was creeping toward ten, and the darkness outside seemed to press against the windows, mirroring the growing unease twisting inside me.

The garden itself was small but serene, with delicate wind chimes hanging from the branches of a cherry blossom tree. Andy had hung them just two days ago, telling me their soft tinkling would soothe my nerves. But tonight, their gentle chimes only served to amplify my anxiety, marking each agonizing second without Andy’s return.

I wrapped my arms tightly around myself, shivering in the chill of the starless night. Being human now made me painfully aware of the cold—one of the many adjustments I was still grappling with since losing my wolf. Everything felt muted: scents were duller, sounds more distant, and my body ached constantly from injuries that would have healed in days when I was a werewolf.

A gust of wind stirred, scattering cherry blossom petals across the stone path. Suddenly, one of the wind chimes crashed to the ground with a sharp clatter. I jumped, heart pounding, spinning toward the garden entrance.

A figure stood silhouetted against the soft glow spilling from the cabin’s windows. For a split second, my body tensed, instinctively ready to shift—a useless reflex now. Then I recognized Andy’s familiar shape as he bent down to retrieve the fallen chime.

“Kira,” he said, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’m back.”

Relief flooded through me, quickly replaced by frustration. “Where have you been? You said you’d be back hours ago.” I crossed the garden toward him, searching his face for answers. “Is my father okay? Did you get him?”

Andy rehung the wind chime before replying. “Your father is safe. But I couldn’t bring him here tonight.”

“What? Why not?” My voice sharpened with worry.

Andy sighed, running a hand through his hair. “There was trouble at the hospital. A fight broke out between wolf packs. Blackwood’s men were involved, and another group—I think the Triads.”

My blood turned ice cold. “The Triads? At the hospital?” The name sent a shiver down my spine. From Andy’s photos, I knew they were dangerous.

“Yeah. It was chaos—wolves tearing at each other, blood everywhere.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I managed to get your father out with a few of my men, but we couldn’t risk bringing him here. If anyone followed…”

I nodded, reluctantly accepting the explanation despite my frustration. “So where is he now?”

“Somewhere safe. A place the Triads can’t find.” Andy’s hands rested firmly on my shoulders. “Trust me, Kira. As soon as it’s safe, I’ll bring him to you.”

I studied his face, desperate to believe him. After everything I’d endured, Andy felt like my only ally. “Okay,” I said finally. “But I want to see him soon. Before we leave for Canada.”

“You will,” Andy promised. As he turned toward the cabin, I noticed a dark stain spreading across the back of his white jacket.

“Andy, you’re bleeding!” I grabbed his arm, spinning him around to get a better look.

He winced. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”
