Chapter 109

Kira’s Perspective

The cool evening breeze caressed my face as Andy’s car wound its way through the twisting forest roads, heading toward the eastern border of Rocco’s territory. My fingers tapped nervously against my thigh, a restless rhythm born from the tension coiling inside me. Outside the window, towering pine trees blurred into long, dark streaks against the fading light of dusk. Every mile we traveled felt like a step deeper into danger, and I could feel the full weight of my fragile human state pressing down on me—no wolf’s heightened senses to guide or protect me now.

“Are you really sure we should be doing this?” Andy’s voice broke the silence that had settled between us over the last fifteen minutes. “We could still turn back and go straight to the border crossing.”

I shook my head, my determination solidifying even as my heart fluttered uneasily. “I have to find out, Andy. Fiona’s child might hold the key to everything—what happened to her, to my father… maybe even to me.”

The heater hummed softly as we pushed further into the dense forest. Without my wolf’s acute senses, the night seemed unnervingly dark, the shadows swallowing up every shape. It felt like moving through a muted, half-blind world, too quiet and dull to be real.

“What do you think we’ll discover?” I asked aloud, voicing the question that had been gnawing at my mind ever since we changed course.

Andy’s grip on the steering wheel tightened just a bit. “It’s hard to say. But if the Triads are involved, and Dr. Green is there…” He trailed off, the unspoken threat hanging in the air.

“I keep going back to Ethan—or Ryan, whatever his real name is. He knew Fiona.” My thoughts raced, trying to piece together scattered fragments. “He must have known about her child, too.”

“The timing is definitely suspicious,” Andy agreed, easing the car to a slower pace as we neared a fork in the road. “Fiona visits you, then dies a few days later. You start digging, and suddenly you’re kidnapped.”

I sank back against the headrest, fatigue washing over me like a tide. “Anyone who gets close to the truth ends up dead or missing.”

“Not everyone,” Andy said softly. “You’re still here.”

My heart hammered against my ribs as the reality of what we were about to do settled in. Two people, facing unknown numbers of enemies, with me barely able to defend myself without my wolf’s abilities.

“Here.” Andy reached into his jacket and pulled out a silver dagger, offering the handle to me first. “Take this. Just in case.”

I accepted the weapon, feeling its weight in my palm. “Will this even work against werewolves? I’m not strong enough anymore to—”

“It’s silver-tipped,” he interrupted firmly. “One good strike is all you’ll need, even with human strength.”

The thought twisted my stomach. I’d never killed anyone before.

“And this.” Andy handed me a small cloth pouch that smelled strongly of herbs. “Rub it on your skin. It’ll mask your human scent, make you harder to detect.”
