Chapter 108
Rocco’s Perspective
The pounding of my own heartbeat echoed loudly in my ears as I fixated on the file spread out before me on the desk. It was as if fragments of a long-overdue puzzle were finally aligning, yet the emerging image churned my stomach with unease. How had I overlooked something so crucial? How far-reaching was this infiltration within my own domain?
I demanded answers, my voice deliberately calm despite the storm of anger raging inside. “What did Fiona’s investigation uncover?”
Dominic stood rigidly across from me, his typically impassive expression now heavy with gravity. “The second autopsy confirms it was murder, not suicide, Alpha.”
My jaw tightened until I could feel the grinding of my teeth. “Why wasn’t this uncovered during the initial examination?”
His eyes darkened with solemnity. “Under intense questioning, the medical examiner admitted he was bribed to falsify the report.”
The word ‘paid’ left a bitter taste in my mouth. I slammed my fist onto the desk, the wood splintering beneath my knuckles. “Someone in my territory bribed an official to cover up a murder, and I was completely unaware?”
Dominic nodded solemnly. “It appears so, Alpha.”
I pushed away from the desk, the restless energy inside me demanding release. My wolf stirred, craving action, vengeance. “The Triads,” I muttered, the name burning like poison on my tongue. “They’ve been hiding in plain sight all this time.”
How could I have been so blind? My focus had been elsewhere—on external threats, on Kira and her father, on my marking ceremony with Kim. Meanwhile, a cancer was growing right under my nose, among those who worked for me, those who pledged loyalty but secretly conspired against me.
“How many others are involved?” I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “How deep does this betrayal run?”
Dominic hesitated, carefully choosing his words. “We don’t know yet, Alpha. We’re investigating everyone who had contact with Fiona before her death.”
I moved toward the window, gazing out over the territory I once believed was secure—mine. The place where Kira had lost her life. A sharp pain clenched my chest as memories of her broken body on the jagged rocks flooded my mind. Could the Triads have been behind that too? Had I been a pawn in their game all along?
“Boss,” Dominic’s voice pierced my thoughts. “There’s more.”
Turning back, I studied his tense stance. “What is it?”
“Dr. Green, Fiona’s attending physician at Lunar Recovery, resigned two days after her supposed suicide.”
My eyebrows lifted in surprise. “Two days after? That’s…”
“Suspicious,” Dominic completed. “Especially since we haven’t been able to trace him since. It’s as if he vanished without a trace.”
I accepted the file he handed me, skimming its contents quickly. Dr. James Green, forty-three, a decade at Lunar Recovery Center. His record was unremarkable—no disciplinary issues, nothing to hint at betrayal.
But then again, the most dangerous infiltrators rarely reveal their true colors until it’s too late.
“Have the cars ready in twenty minutes,” I interrupted firmly. “Alert the elite squad. We move fast.”
Dominic looked like he wanted to argue. “With all due respect, sir, this could be dangerous. Let us handle it—”
“No.” My tone brooked no opposition. “This is my territory. My responsibility.” I stepped closer, letting my Alpha presence fill the room. “These traitors infiltrated my pack right under my nose, and I didn’t see it. They may have had a hand in Kira’s death.”
My voice faltered briefly at her name, but I pushed through the pain. “I will look into the eyes of anyone who betrays this pack. I will make sure they understand the consequences—personally.”
Dominic recognized the finality in my voice and nodded. “Twenty minutes, then.”
As he left to prepare, I returned to the window. Somewhere out there was a doctor who might hold the key to Fiona’s death, the Triads’ plans, perhaps even the truth about Kira. And I would find him.
I pulled out my phone and sent quick instructions to Marcus to secure the compound during my absence. Then, opening my desk drawer, I retrieved my gun, methodically checking it before sliding it into its holster.
My wolf growled in approval. We had been too reactive for too long, always responding to threats after they appeared. Now, it was time to hunt.
If the Triads believed they could invade my territory and harm those under my protection without consequence, they were about to learn why the Blackwoods had ruled these lands for generations. I would root out every traitor, every infiltrator, every person involved in this betrayal.
Starting with Dr. Green.
