Chapter 112
Kira’s Perspective
The enormous gray wolf that had once been Dr. Green revealed sharp, glistening fangs as it fixed its fierce amber eyes on me, radiating pure lethal intent. Stripped of my wolf’s strength, I was nothing more than a fragile human standing before a predator built to kill without hesitation. My heart pounded wildly in my chest as I edged backward toward the door, painfully aware that the tight confines of the cabin offered me no escape or advantage.
“You killed Fiona, you tried to murder your own baby, and now you want to take me down too?” I called out, my voice trembling more than I intended. “That’s some serious bravery for a doctor.”
A low, menacing growl rumbled from deep within Dr. Green’s massive throat as he lowered his heavy head, muscles rippling beneath his thick gray fur. I caught Andy’s gaze across the room and gave him a subtle nod. He understood immediately—his priority was to shield the baby and Noah, while I distracted the wolf.
“Alright then!” I shouted, yanking open the door and darting outside. “If you’ve got the guts, come and get me!”
The cool night air rushed into my lungs as I bolted into the dense forest. Behind me, the thunderous pounding of paws against the earth followed by a chilling howl sent shivers down my spine. God, he was fast. I weaved between trees, each breath searing my lungs. My human body, so fragile and untrained, wasn’t made for this kind of endurance—no wolf stamina, no supernatural strength—just me: vulnerable, mortal, and terrified.
Moonlight sifted through the canopy, casting shifting patches of pale light on the forest floor as I ran. The sound of heavy paws grew louder, thud after thud, closing the distance. Sweat trickled down my face despite the coolness of the night. My legs felt as if they were weighted with lead, muscles screaming in protest, begging for relief I couldn’t grant.
Suddenly, a loud crash erupted from the underbrush to my right. I spun sharply, nearly losing my footing, as Dr. Green’s massive form burst through the trees. He collided with me like a speeding truck, sending me sprawling across the rough ground. The silver dagger—my only defense—flew from my grasp, skidding several feet away.
Gasping for air, pain flared sharply across my side where I’d hit the ground. Desperation surged through me as I scrambled toward the dagger, fingers clawing at dirt and leaves. The wolf’s hot breath brushed the back of my neck. Too close. I was running out of time.
Meanwhile, inside the cabin, Andy moved swiftly. He scooped up the crying infant, cradling the tiny body against his chest while checking on Noah. The young man’s eyelids fluttered, consciousness slowly returning.
“Noah, can you hear me?” Andy asked softly, helping him sit up with gentle care. “We have to get out of here. Now.”
Noah nodded weakly, eyes unfocused but aware. “What… happened?”
“No time to explain,” Andy replied, steadying Noah with one arm while holding the baby in the other. “Can you walk? We need to move.”
They made their way cautiously toward the back door, Noah stumbling but growing steadier with each step.
“Find someplace safe to hide,” Andy instructed in a low, urgent tone. “No matter what you hear, don’t come out until I find you.”
I crawled backward until my heel slipped off the edge. Pebbles tumbled down the cliff behind me, their distant clatters echoing faintly in the night. I was trapped. Blood dripped from a fresh gash on my arm where Dr. Green’s claws had raked me, the pain sharp and relentless.
—
“You can kill me,” I gasped, buying precious seconds, “but the truth won’t die with me. Rocco’s already investigating.”
Dr. Green advanced, jaws parted to reveal shining fangs. His eyes held no trace of humanity—only cold, predatory focus. Frantically, I scanned my surroundings and found nothing but the sheer drop behind me.
Suddenly, a powerful howl shattered the silence. From the trees emerged a massive silver-gray wolf, muscles rippling beneath a gleaming coat. Andy. He had shifted. His wolf form was magnificent—strong, agile, and blazing with protective fury.
