Chapter 118
Kira’s Perspective:
As I stepped inside Jennifer’s office, my eyes were immediately drawn to the enormous array of monitoring screens that dominated the far wall. Each screen displayed a different scene—some showed the dense forest boundaries, others captured bustling urban centers, and a few revealed security camera footage from buildings I didn’t recognize. The room itself seemed more spacious than I remembered, furnished with sleek, modern pieces that reflected a sharp sense of order and control. The faint, comforting aroma of pine lingered in the air—a subtle signature that always seemed to follow Jennifer wherever she went.
Jennifer stood facing a holographic map, her back turned toward me. Even from behind, her commanding presence was unmistakable. Her short, silver-streaked hair was cut with military precision, and her posture was rigid, unyielding. When she finally turned to face me, her eyes locked onto mine with that intense, penetrating gaze she always wielded—a look that made me feel as though she could peer directly into my soul.
“We’ve got a breakthrough,” she announced without any introduction, motioning me closer to the glowing holographic display. No small talk, no easing into the conversation—just the way Jennifer always operated. “The Triads’ core leadership is scheduled to hold a secret meeting in exactly one month.”
My breath hitched, caught somewhere between excitement and apprehension. “Three years of tracking them, and this is the first real opportunity we’ve had,” I murmured, stepping closer to the map. I studied the glowing points carefully, each one marking a potential location for the meeting.
Jennifer nodded, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a crumpled piece of paper stained with blood. She placed it gently on her desk. “The price was high. Our inside contact, known only as ‘Gray Shadow,’ sent us this intel—and then disappeared. No word since.”
A cold knot tightened in my stomach. Another life possibly lost in this relentless, shadowy war. Over the past three years, I’d watched too many names be etched onto the memorial wall, each one a painful reminder of the cost we paid.
Adjusting the hologram, Jennifer shifted the image to reveal an ancient manor house nestled within thick forest. The digital rendering highlighted its imposing stone walls, multiple wings, and vast grounds that stretched far beyond the immediate perimeter.
“The meeting will take place on the night of the full moon, at Blackcrest Manor,” she explained, zooming in on the estate.
