I stood firm, my hand outstretched and bleeding, the wound caused by silver pulsing with relentless pain that refused to subside. The sharp, metallic tang of my own blood blended with the damp, musty air of the cave, wrapping around me like a chilling reminder of the danger we faced. Between my sister Lyra, who lay injured and fragile on the cold stone floor behind me, and Kira—the woman I once called mate—there was a tense divide I couldn’t cross. Lyra’s shallow breaths whispered her stubborn will to survive, while Kira’s eyes had hardened into icy daggers, erasing any trace of the bond we once shared.
In the cavernous space, two opposing forces had taken their positions, a battle line drawn by choices I had never wanted to confront. Andy and his team fanned out before me, weapons at the ready, their stances rigid and prepared for the fight to come. The faint glow of pale blue energy, remnants of the interrupted ritual, pulsed around us like a living entity, sensing the thick tension that hung heavy in the air.
“There’s no need for this, Kira,” I said quietly, my voice steady despite the burning ache radiating from my palm up through my arm. “We can work this out—let’s talk.”
A cold, bitter laugh echoed off the stone walls, sharp and unforgiving. “Talking is over, Rocco,” Kira replied, her tone cutting through the silence like a blade. “You’ve already made your choice.”
I caught sight of Andy shifting beside her, his body contorting as he prepared to launch his attack. The others mirrored his movements, weapons raised, eyes fixed on me with lethal intent. Beneath my skin, my wolf stirred, bristling at the threat, but I forced it down. I didn’t want to fight them—not Kira’s people, not like this.
“Last warning, Rocco,” Kira’s voice was as sharp as the blade she brandished. “Step aside, or suffer the consequences.”
I shook my head slowly, the weight of my decision pressing down on my chest like a heavy stone. “I can’t. But I swear, Lyra will have a fair trial.”
“Your promises mean nothing,” Kira snapped, eyes narrowing to slits. “The council will deliver the punishment she deserves.”
Before I could answer, Andy lunged forward, fully transformed into his wolf form, teeth bared as he aimed for my throat. Reacting instantly, I shifted as well, my body changing to meet his attack. We collided in the center of the cave, a tangle of claws and fangs locked in a fierce struggle for dominance.
I could have ended it quickly by going for his throat, but I held back. These were Kira’s allies—I refused to kill them if I could help it.
