Chapter 168
Kira’s fingers curled tighter around her weapon, her expression hardening. “Your mental illness doesn’t excuse what you’ve done, Lyra,” she said sharply, her voice cutting through the tension.
I fought harder against the opponents restraining me, desperation fueling every movement as I tried to reach my sister. Then, abruptly, the atmosphere within the cave shifted. The faint blue energy that had been lingering around us suddenly began to pulse with greater intensity, rippling through the air like waves crashing against a shore.
Without warning, Lyra’s hand shot out and snatched something from the ground—a shard of the ritual materials scattered across the floor. Instantly, a blinding flash of light exploded, and the energy seemed to surge directly into her body. For a moment, everyone froze, stunned by the dazzling spectacle.
Horror gripped me as I watched Lyra’s wounds close at an unnatural speed. The eerie blue light flooded her eyes, transforming them into glowing orbs that bore no resemblance to her usual color. Slowly, she rose to her feet, her movements surprisingly smooth despite the injuries she had just sustained.
“The moon goddess still favors me…” she murmured, her voice warped and echoing in a strange, unsettling way.
The energy spiraled around her, coalescing into a chaotic vortex that forced us all backward. Rocks began to fall from the cave’s ceiling as the power destabilized the very structure of the cavern. I scrambled to my feet, shifting back into my human form, heart pounding.
“Lyra, stop!” I yelled over the growing rumble. “That energy will destroy you!”
But my sister seemed deaf to my cries—or perhaps she simply didn’t care. Her laughter twisted into something manic, the energy around her growing stronger with every pulse, pushing us further away.
This isn’t right. The ritual energy wasn’t fully dispersed. She’s channeling it somehow, but she can’t control it.
The cave trembled violently, cracks spiderwebbing across the walls and ceiling. Rebecca’s voice pierced through the chaos. “The entrance is collapsing! We’re trapped!”
Lyra’s face twisted in agony even as the energy poured into her. Her screams mingled with the roar of falling debris, creating a terrifying symphony that echoed through the cave.
I stumbled backward, locking eyes with Kira across the chaotic space. For a brief moment, an old connection flickered between us—a silent acknowledgment of the peril we faced together.
“This place is coming down!” I shouted, pointing at the widening fractures spreading overhead.
