His brow furrowed in puzzlement. “Thank me? For what exactly?”

I held his gaze firmly, refusing to look away. “For helping me escape three months ago. At the Triads’ high-level meeting.”

A sudden pallor swept over his face. “Wait… that was you? The woman with the red wig?”

I nodded slowly. “Yes. You could have caught me then, or at least raised an alarm. But you didn’t.” My tone remained calm, but there was an edge of gratitude beneath it. “You saved my life.”

He paused, then spoke quietly, “I know much of what Alpha—Rocco—did was wrong. Especially toward you.”

My heart fluttered with cautious hope at this unexpected admission. “Wrong how?”

Dominic glanced nervously toward the door before returning his gaze to me. “After your… death, he was never the same. The things he did—it all came from grief.” He shook his head, sorrow etched across his face. “Every night, he would visit your body, speak to it, tell it how much he loved you…”

A chill ran down my spine. “Body? What body?”

His eyes widened in realization of his slip. “I mean… your memorial… the pictures…”

But I had caught it. The preserved body hidden away in that secret chamber—he knew about it. My mind raced with dark possibilities. Had Rocco somehow kept what he believed was my corpse? Was that why Kim’s body was there? Had he confused her for me?

“Whatever you think his love was,” I said coldly, “true love doesn’t shatter its mate’s heart.”

Dominic looked at me with sorrowful eyes. “I realize I can’t ask for your forgiveness…”
