Chapter 196
Gazing into his anxious eyes, a wave of guilt surged through me. It wasn’t fair to Andy, making him witness the charade of affection I had to feign with my former partner. I owed Andy more than silence—I owed him clarity, reassurance. Yet all I could offer in that moment was a cloud of uncertainty and doubt.
When we stepped back inside, I carefully examined the suite prepared for Dad, wanting to make sure every detail was perfect and comfortable. Rocco busied himself overseeing the installation of medical monitoring equipment, while I arranged Dad’s cherished belongings and framed photographs, hoping to recreate a space that felt familiar and safe for him.
My breath caught when I stumbled upon an old photo of Rocco and me. We were nestled in the mountains, my head resting gently on his shoulder, both of us smiling with pure, unburdened joy. In that moment frozen in time, we looked so happy—before the betrayal, before everything I had lost.
I hadn’t realized Rocco had entered the room until his voice shattered the silence. “I’ve asked the kitchen to prepare your father’s favorite dishes. Is there anything else he might need?”
I kept my distance, my voice clipped. “He likes chamomile tea in the mornings. And…” Suddenly, the rest of what I wanted to say slipped away, lost in the tension.
A heavy silence settled between us, thick and uncomfortable. Tentatively, Rocco broke it again, “I know this is hard for you. If there’s anything I can do to make it easier…”
“Just play your part and don’t cross the line,” I interrupted sharply, unable to stomach his false concern any longer. “That’s enough.”
The following day, an ambulance brought Dad back to the mansion. The medical team carefully settled him into the prepared room. Though his body was frail, his spirit seemed lifted, and he expressed quiet satisfaction at finally being “home.”
“Back to normal life at last,” Dad said with a faint smile, his voice weaker than I remembered but still warm. “Hospitals are so bleak.”
I took a seat beside his bed. “We’ll take good care of you, Dad.”
His eyes shifted past me to Rocco. “You’ve always been a good son-in-law. Taking care of my daughter… and now me too.”
Rocco responded with the right words, his act nearly convincing.
Then Dad asked abruptly, “When are you two planning to have children? I’m ready to be a grandfather.”
