I shoved the door open with all my strength, my breath coming in quick gasps. The scene before me made my blood freeze in my veins.
My father lay motionless on the floor beside his bed, looking frighteningly still. His chest barely moved, and his skin had taken on an ashen quality that sent terror shooting through me.
But what made my heart stop completely was the figure standing over him. A man’s back was turned to me, but I could see the glint of a syringe in his hand as he looked down at my father’s vulnerable form. When he slowly turned around, I felt like I’d been punched in the
stomach.
Ethan.
He should have been locked up in the organization’s maximum security facility, not standing in my father’s bedroom with a syringe and
that twisted smile on his face.
“Good to see you again, Kira,” he said, his voice sending chills down my spine.
Before I could respond, a blur of movement rushed past me. Rocco charged into the room, his fingers extending into claws, a primal growl emanating from deep in his chest. He lunged at Ethan with lightning speed, aiming straight for his throat.
Ethan moved with shocking agility, sidestepping the attack at the last second. The syringe clattered to the floor as he twisted away. My gaze frantically darted between the fallen needle and my father’s still form.
Andy burst in right behind Rocco, immediately scanning the room for other threats, his eyes narrowed and alert. I didn’t waste another second and rushed to my father’s side, dropping to my knees beside him. My fingers pressed against his neck, desperately searching for a pulse.
Please be alive, please be alive, please be alive.
Relief flooded through me when I felt the steady, though weak, rhythm beneath my fingertips. His skin was cold to the touch, but his breathing was regular. I silently cursed myself for ever leaving his room. Why hadn’t I stayed? How could I have been so stupid?
“What did you do to him?” I snarled, looking up at Ethan, fury replacing fear as I gripped my father’s cold hand.
Ethan backed up a few steps, maintaining distance from Rocco who looked ready to tear him apart. “The old man’s reactions were quicker than I expected,” he said with a casual shrug. “Don’t worry, I haven’t done anything yet.”
“How did you get in here?” Rocco demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. His body was tense, poised to attack at the slightest provocation.
Ethan feigned hurt, placing a hand over his heart. “What, no warm welcome for an old friend? I’m wounded, truly.”
Andy knelt beside my father, his eyes never leaving Ethan as he checked vital signs. “His breathing is steady. Pulse is weak but stable. We need a doctor though.”
My fingers flew over my phone, typing a frantic message to Ian. The thought of losing my father again, just after getting him back, made my chest feel like it was caving in. I couldn’t bear it, not after everything we’d been through.

Then I guess I’m just special,” Ethan said with a smirk, but his eyes held something calculating. “Or maybe you should ask Lyra.”
The room went deadly silent. I felt my body go rigid with shock.
Rocco’s reaction was even more pronounced. His entire body seemed to freeze, shoulders stiffening visibly. “Lyra is dead,” he said flatly. “I watched her disappear in the energy explosion.”
A slow, sly smile spread across Ethan’s face, his eyes glinting with malicious delight. “Oh, Rocco, you always believe what you see, don’t
you?”
My mind raced at lightning speed. If Lyra was alive… what did that mean? We all saw her consumed by that energy blast in the cave. There wasn’t even a body left. But if she had somehow survived–a shiver ran down my spine at the implications.
I exchanged a stunned glance with Rocco, momentarily forgetting our animosity in the face of this bombshell. His expression mirrored my own confusion and alarm.
