Chapter 203
(80)
The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Ethan seemed to be enjoying our reaction, casually straightening his sleeve cuffs as if we were at a social gathering rather than a confrontation.
“Why are you here?‘ I demanded, my thoughts still reeling from his revelation. “What do you want with my father?”
Ethan glanced down at Derek, then back at me. “Just paying a visit to an old friend. Checking in, you might say.”
Rocco took a threatening step forward. “You’d better start talking straight, or I’ll-”
“You’ll what?” Ethan interrupted, pushing himself off the wall. “Kill me? Then you’ll never know what I know.” He looked pointedly at my father. “Your father would be better off not saying anything, though it doesn’t really matter if he does. Remember, we’re not finished yet.”
My fingers tightened around my father’s hand. “Stay away from him!”
Ethan’s smile widened. “Don’t worry, today is just a friendly visit. Saying hello to old friends.” His gaze shifted between Rocco and me. “Our reckoning will come later. We have plenty of time to settle our scores.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small sphere. “I think we’ll have to continue this conversation another time.”
“Don’t you dare-” Rocco lunged forward, but it was too late.
Ethan tossed the object to the floor. A cloud of white smoke instantly filled the room, making me cough and my eyes burn. I heard
crashes and thumps as Rocco and Andy tried to grab him, but visibility was zero.
Through the coughing and confusion, I heard the window sliding open. By the time the smoke cleared enough to see, Ethan was gone, the curtains billowing in the breeze from the open window.
Rocco rushed to the window, looking out into the darkness, but there was no sign of Ethan. “Dominic!” he barked into his phone. “I need to know how the hell an intruder got past all our security. Full sweep, immediately.”
Ian burst into the room with his medical team, immediately attending to my father. “What happened?” he demanded, checking vitals and
shining a light into Derek’s eyes.
Rocco was already issuing more orders into his phone, his voice tight with controlled fury. Security personnel could be heard rushing through the house, radios crackling with urgent reports.
Ian picked up the discarded syringe, examining its contents. “It’s a neurotoxin,” he said grimly. “Specifically designed to kill werewolves. But it doesn’t appear to have been used.”
Relief flooded through me, be alive?
“If Ethan escaped…” I started.

I stood up slowly as lan and his team transferred my father back to the bed. The situation had just become far more complicated. If Ethan was free, and Lyra possibly alive, combined with a compromised organization…
Rocco met my eyes across the room, and for a moment, our mutual antagonism was forgotten in the face of a greater threat. I could see the same calculation in his eyes that I was making.
“We need to check on the organization,” I said to Andy, but my gaze remained on my father’s pale face. “But I can’t leave him now.”
lan looked up from checking my father’s vital signs. “He’ll be fine. He appears to have fainted from shock or exertion, but his vitals are stable. He just needs rest.”
I felt torn between staying with my father and investigating what was happening with the organization.
“We need to go to headquarters,” Andy said quietly beside me. “But…”
I looked down at my father’s peaceful face, then back at the open window where Ethan had escaped.
The threat wasn’t over–it was just beginning.
