Chapter 209
Kira’s POV
I sat silently by my father’s hospital bed, my fingers unconsciously rubbing the edge of the thin mattress. The rhythmic beeping of medical equipment was the only sound breaking the heavy silence between us. My mind was still spinning, trying to process everything he’d just told me about Lyra–Rocco’s supposedly innocent, victimized sister.
Lyra, who had experimented on werewolves.
Lyra, who could transfer her consciousness between bodies.
79
Lyra, who might now be inhabiting someone else after the cave explosion.
God, it was almost too much to comprehend.
Dad looked exhausted, his body frail against the pillows, but his eyes had taken on a determined, worried gleam. After a few minutes, he slowly reached out and placed his hand over mine. The weight of it felt both comforting and concerning.
“Kira,” he said, his voice hoarse, “I know this is a heavy burden…”
He struggled to meet my eyes, the effort visible in the tightening around his mouth.
“I hate asking this of you, Kira. It’s a burden no father should place on his child, but I see no other way. But I need you to help me resolve this. End Lyra.”
My chest constricted so suddenly I could barely breathe. The weight of what he was asking pressed down on me like a physical force.
“I’ve made mistakes,” he continued, his voice growing stronger with conviction. “Terrible ones. But Lyra must be stopped.”
I watched him carefully, noting how his hands trembled slightly despite his firm tone.
“You understand why I can’t do it myself,” he said, gesturing weakly to his body. “I’m not strong enough anymore.”
“I know, Dad,” I whispered, swallowing against the tightness in my throat.
“I failed before,” he continued, eyes haunted. “And that failure led to more innocent victims. I can’t fail again.”
A heaviness settled in my chest as I thought about all the Triads‘ evil actions–the experiments, the missing werewolves, the suffering–all potentially stemming from Lyra’s work. I remembered the woman in the cave, her smile twisted with malice as she taunted me. The thought that she might now be walking around in someone else’s body made my skin crawl.
This wasn’t just about family drama anymore, This was about protecting people.
Relief washed over his face, mixed with a pain that made him look decades older. “Thank you. You’re braver than I ever was.”
