Chapter 212

1 tapped my foot impatiently against the gravel of the parking lot, checking my watch for the third time in five minutes. The morning air felt unusually cold against my skin as I waited for Rocco. My heart wouldn’t slow down, beating a nervous rhythm in my chest. This wasn’t just another mission–we were potentially walking into Lyra’s lair, a woman who could supposedly transfer her consciousness

between bodies.

I double–checked the contents of my backpack–flashlight, communication device, a small handgun loaded with silver bullets, and basic medical supplies. Everything was in place, but I still felt unprepared. My thoughts kept drifting to my father, lying in his hospital bed. Dominic was watching over him, but was that enough? If Lyra could become anyone…

A sleek black SUV pulled into the lot, interrupting my thoughts. Rocco was behind the wheel, his expression unreadable as he stopped in front of me. I took a deep breath and opened the passenger door.

“You’re late,” I said, sliding into the seat.

“Security protocols,” he replied simply, nodding toward the back seat. “I brought extra equipment.”

I glanced behind to see additional flashlights, a first aid kit, and what looked like specialized tracking devices. Despite myself, I had to admit he’d come prepared.

We drove in silence for the first few minutes, both of us focused on the task ahead rather than the awkward tension between us. I pulled out my tablet and studied the building schematics we’d managed to obtain.

“The main entrance is likely monitored or blocked,” I said, marking a point on the map. “We should try this service entrance on the east

side.”

Rocco nodded, keeping his eyes on the road. “If Lyra’s using this place, she’ll have security measures in place.”

The road became rougher as we left the city behind, transitioning to a neglected stretch of asphalt bordered by overgrown vegetation. Dead branches scratched against the car windows like skeletal fingers.

“This whole area used to be a biotech park,” Rocco explained, breaking the silence. “It was abandoned about five years ago when the funding dried up.”

I studied his profile as he drove, noting the tension in his jaw. “You seem to know this place well,” I said carefully. “Have you been here before?”

He hesitated, then gave a short nod. “A few years back. There was a potential acquisition project. It didn’t go through.”

Rocco’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. “Not directly,” he answered after a pause. “But thinking back, the timing does align with when she started to… change.” He glanced at me briefly. “If Lyra chose this place as a hideout, it’s not random.

After about twenty minutes, Rocco turned onto a barely visible dirt road. The SUV bumped along the uneven surface until he finally

I nodded and grabbed my backpack. The abandoned research park looked like something from a horror movie–broken windows, crumbling walls, and nature slowly reclaiming the structures. The main building stood three stories tall, its modern architecture now deteriorating but still imposing.

We approached cautiously, staying low and moving between overgrown bushes for cover. I noticed fresh tire tracks in the mud near the

building.

“Someone’s been here recently,” I whispered, pointing at the ground.

Rocco nodded grimly. “Multiple vehicles, based on the different tread patterns.”

We reached a side entrance, and I immediately saw signs of forced entry–the lock had been professionally picked, with minimal damage but clear signs of tampering.

“Someone wanted to keep their visit quiet,” Rocco murmured, examining the door. “Careful work.”

“Not just one person,” I added. “Look at these different fingerprint smudges on the handle.”
