Chapter 211

Kira’s POV

I stood in the conference room, my eyes fixed on Rocco as I waited for his answer. The question hung in the air between us: who would he believe–Lyra or me? The only sound breaking the heavy silence was the distant beeping of hospital equipment down the hall. My heart hammered against my ribs, but I kept my expression neutral, refusing to show how much his answer mattered.

Rocco’s face was a battlefield of emotions–disbelief, confusion, and pain warring across his features. His jaw clenched tight, and his fingers curled into fists at his sides. What should have been seconds felt like hours as I waited.

He finally spoke, his voice low and hesitant. “Kira, this iscomplicated.”

My stomach tightened. Of course. Here it comes.

“Lyra is my sister,” he continued, his eyes shifting away from mine. “The only family I have left. We grew up together. I’ve protected her for years.” He ran a hand through his hair, sighing heavily. “What you’re suggesting–what your father claims–it’s beyond anything I could have imagined.”

“I need evidence,” he added, his tone firming slightly. “I need to be certain this isn’t just your father’s version of events.”

A sharp pain lanced through my chest–not surprise, but the bitter sting of expectation fulfilled. The familiar taste of disappointment spread across my tongue. Every single time when forced to choose between Lyra and me, Rocco had always chosen her. Why had I expected this time to be different?

I couldn’t help the short, harsh laugh that escaped my lips. “Of course. I should have known.”

My voice was calm but edged with ice as I continued, “You’ve never chosen me, have you? Not once. Why would now be any different?”

Rocco stepped forward, his brow furrowing. “This isn’t about choosing sides, Kira. This is about verifying facts.”

“No, I cut him off coldly. “That’s exactly what this is. Taking sides. Just like you’ve done every single time before.” I met his gaze unflinchingly. “You know what? I don’t even care who you believe anymore. I’ll handle this myself.”

I turned to leave, my body tense with anger and resolve. I was done waiting for Rocco to put me first. It was never going to happen.

“No, Kira,” Rocco’s voice stopped me, suddenly firm and decisive. “I believe you.”

I turned back slowly, suspicion coursing through me. His face had changed–something had shifted in his expression.

“I just needed a moment to process it,” he continued, moving closer. “The Lyra I thought I knew… she couldn’t have done these things. But the evidence has been there all along, hasn’t it? The mental health issues, her obsession with those ancient texts… His voice caught. “I’ve been blind. I’ve been choosing to protect her for so long that I couldn’t see what it was costing everyone else.” He met my eyes directly. “What it cost you.”

He took a deep breath. “I owe you more than I can ever repay. But at least now I can do the right thing.”

I studied his face, searching for signs of deception. Was this genuine, or just another manipulation? My instincts screamed caution, but something in his eyes–a rawness I hadn’t seen before–made me hesitate.

“Fine, I finally said, my voice still wary. Then we need a plan.

Rocco nodded, a hint of relief crossing his features. “First, we need to figure out what Lyra’s planning.”

My phone suddenly rang, breaking the tension. Andy’s name flashed on the screen. I quickly answered, pressing the phone to my ear.
