Chapter 217

Kira’s POV

I pressed my face against the narrow slits of the ventilation shaft, struggling to see what was happening in the hall below. The metal grate created striped shadows across my vision, limiting what I could make out to blurry silhouettes. But while my sight was compromised, I could hear everything with surprising clarity.

I held my breath and shifted my position, trying to get a better angle. My muscles tensed as I spotted a woman–wearing clothes identical to mine–slowly approaching Rocco. The way she moved, the slight tilt of her head, even the casual brush of fingers through hair–it was all me. Seeing someone wearing my mannerisms like a costume made my skin crawl.

“Rocco…” Her voice floated up to me, honeyed in a way I’d never speak. “We’ve wasted too much time on hatred.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, adrenaline surging through me in equal parts fear and fury. That wasn’t my voice. Those weren’t my words. I needed to stop whatever was happening, now.

I began crawling through the ventilation duct, trying desperately not to make any noise. The metal passage was narrow and rough, scraping my knees and palms with every movement. Blood beaded on my skin, but I ignored the pain. I just needed to get closer, to hear more clearly what they were saying.

“…perhaps we can start over.” Her voice became more distinct as I inched forward.

“Kira…this isn’t like you…” Rocco sounded confused, uncertain. “What’s happened?”

My stomach twisted into knots. He sensed something was off, but he wasn’t sure it wasn’t me.

“The danger made me reconsider our relationship,” the fake Kira continued. “I don’t want to lose you again, Rocco.” Her voice sounded so real, so sincere–enough to fool anyone who didn’t know better.

“You said you’d never forgive me…” Doubt colored Rocco’s response.

I finally reached the end of the shaft, positioned directly above the center of the hall. Now I could see them clearly–Rocco standing with his brow furrowed, and the impostor just feet away from him, wearing my clothes, my face, even my hairstyle.

There was no time for hesitation. I quickly removed the metal cover of the vent, letting it slide to one side with a soft clang. Then I dropped down from the ventilation shaft, stumbling slightly as my injured ankle protested, but quickly regaining my balance.

Rocco and ‘fake Kira” turned toward me simultaneously, their expressions worlds apart. Rocco’s face registered pure shock and confusion, his eyes darting rapidly between me and my doppelgänger. The impostor’s face flashed with momentary annoyance before quickly composing into a mask of surprise.

Rocco, that’s not me!” I shouted directly at him. “She’s Lyra!”

“Don’t believe her!” the impostor immediately countered. “This is Lyra’s trap–she’s imitating me!”

Rocco stood between us, visibly bewildered. “What’s going on? You can’t both be Kira.”

The fake Kira grabbed Rocco’s arm possessively. “She’s Lyra in disguise! She’s trying to separate us!*

I forced myself to stay calm despite my racing heart. “I was upstairs and saw the surveillance footage,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “She was planning to impersonate me.”

Rocco’s gaze shifted between us, his expression morphing from confusion to wariness. I could see him searching for details, for anything that might distinguish between us.

“Rocco, remember when we first met?” I began. “At that medical symposium in autumn. You spilled my coffee and insisted on buying me a new one. But I told you if you really wanted to make it up to me, you’d take me to dinner instead.”

I saw a flicker of recognition in Rocco’s eyes, but almost immediately, the fake Kira jumped in: “You were wearing a navy suit, and I had on a white dress. After dinner, you drove me home, but we sat in the car for two hours just talking.”

The impostor’s expression shifted, her mouth curving into an unfamiliar smile. “Very clever, sister.

Lyra smirked coldly. “Normal? What is normal? Normal never got me anywhere.” She turned to Rocco. “I know you love Kira, but she’s just a copy of Kim. And now, I’ve given you the perfect blend of both.”
