Chapter 218
Kira’s POV

I held my breath, feeling my heart hammering against my ribs as I waited for Rocco to make his choice. The air in the room felt thick, almost unbreathable. Sweat trickled down my back despite the cool temperature. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Rocco’s face, searching for any hint of recognition, any sign that he could tell the difference between me and the woman wearing my face.
Rocco’s expression shifted subtly. The confusion in his eyes gradually hardened into something more resolute. His jaw tightened, shoulders squaring as he seemed to reach a decision. I dug my fingernails into my palms, bracing myself.
He took a step forward–toward Lyra. My stomach dropped, a cold wave of disappointment washing over me.
But then he moved with lightning speed. His hand shot out, grabbing Lyra’s wrist just as she was about to touch his face again. Her expression froze in shock.
“You’re not her,” Rocco said, his voice low and dangerous. “I would know Kira anywhere. No matter what face you wear, Lyra.”
Relief flooded through me so intensely my knees nearly buckled. Thank god. He knew. He could tell the difference.
Lyra’s face–my face, but not my expression–contorted from triumph to fury in an instant. “How?” she demanded. “How could you possibly know?”
“Your eyes,” Rocco said simply. “They’ve never held the same light. Even when you were alive.”
I watched as Lyra’s borrowed features twisted with rage. It was deeply unsettling seeing my own face make expressions I never would.
“You really think she still cares about you?” Lyra spat, struggling against Rocco’s grip. “After everything you did to her?”
“Let go of Kim,” I cut in, stepping closer. “She’s innocent in all this.”
Lyra turned toward me, her hatred practically radiating from her. “Innocent? You know nothing. Neither of you do.”
“It’s over, Lyra,” Rocco said firmly. “You need help, not this… this madness. This isn’t the way.”
She laughed then, a sound that made my skin crawl. “Over? I’ve barely begun, brother dear.”
Without warning, Lyra twisted her arm with inhuman strength, breaking free of Rocco’s grip. She staggered back, her movements suddenly different–jerky and uncoordinated, as if two people were fighting for control of the same body.
I stared at her, trying to make sense of what was happening. This was Kim’s body with Lyra’s consciousness inside it. But I remember Kim was supposed to get married to Rocco, carrying his children.
“What did you do to her?” I demanded, my voice shaking slightly. “What happened to the babies?”

“We’ll meet again soon, brother,” Lyra called out, her eyes fixed on Rocco as she backed away. “This was just a warm–up.”
Then she was gone, disappearing through a doorway as more chunks of ceiling rained down.
“We need to go after her!” Rocco shouted, already moving toward where Lyra had vanished.
“Rocco, wait!” I grabbed his arm, pulling him back as another section of wall crumbled. “This whole place is coming down! We’ll be buried
alive!”
He hesitated, clearly torn between pursuing his sister and ensuring our safety. Another violent tremor made the decision for him as the doorway Lyra had used collapsed completely.
“The west exit might still be clear,” Rocco said quickly, assessing our options. “Stay close to me!”
We raced through the deteriorating corridors, ducking under fallen beams and leaping over debris. My injured ankle screamed in protest with every step, the pain shooting up my leg like fire. I bit my lip to keep from crying out, pushing through it. Each time the building shook, more pieces of ceiling crashed down around us.
