Chapter 231
Kira’s POV
The silence that fell over the room when Rocco appeared was so thick I could almost choke on it. There we were–my estranged mother, my estranged husband, Andy, and me–locked in a standoff that felt like the beginning of a disaster.
I stood in the middle, physically and emotionally caught between two storms. My mother’s eyes flashed with instant recognition and hatred when she saw Rocco. His appearance was shocking even to me–his usually impeccable clothes were torn and dirty, covered in dust and debris from the collapsed facility. Dark circles rimmed his eyes, and a fresh cut ran across his cheekbone. He looked like he’d been through hell.
“Well, this is a surprise, Mr. Blackwood,” my mother said, her voice dripping with icy contempt. “You look terrible.”
Rocco’s jaw tightened, but he kept his composure. “Vanessa. I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Andy moved closer to me, his stance protective but tense. I could feel his body coiled like a spring, ready to intervene if things escalated. The security personnel had retreated, but I knew they were just outside, waiting for any sign of trouble.
“Maybe we should all sit down,” I suggested, desperate to create some semblance of civility in this powder keg of a room. “I’ll have some tea brought in.”
“Tea?” My mother laughed bitterly. “How very proper. Shall we discuss the weather while we’re at it? Or perhaps how your husband destroyed my daughter’s life?”
I flinched at her words. My daughter. Singular. Not daughters. The exclusion was subtle but unmistakable.
I signaled to a staff member hovering uncertainly in the doorway, asking for refreshments. Then I gestured toward the sitting area.
“Please, let’s try to have a rational conversation.”
My mother sat down reluctantly, perching on the edge of an armchair as if ready to spring up at any moment. Her body language screamed hostility–shoulders rigid, hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Rocco chose to stand by the window, as far from her as possible while still remaining in the room.
“Do you know what she’s become since you abandoned her?” my mother asked, staring directly at Rocco. “Do you even care?”
Rocco’s expression darkened. “I tried to contact her after-”
‘Liar!‘ My mother’s voice cracked like a whip. “She waited for you. For three months, she sat by that phone. Every day. Every night.
“Three months?‘ I couldn’t help interrupting. Something didn’t add up. “After what?”
My mother turned to me, her eyes softening just slightly. “After she lost your babies. She still believed he’d come back to her.”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I’d known about the pregnancy, about the loss, but hearing it from my mother–Kim’s mother- made it horrifyingly real in a way it hadn’t been before.
“She delivered those babies alone,” my mother continued, her voice growing quieter but more intense. “No Alpha to support her through the birth. No mate to help her body recover. Do you have any idea what that does to a female werewolf, Mr. Blackwood? To deliver dead pups with no mate bond to sustain her?”

I felt sick. Despite everything Kim had done, despite the rivalry and pain between us, no woman deserved that. I looked at Rocco, whose face had gone ashen. He stared at the floor, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
“She was the pride of our pack,” my mother said, turning back to me. Beautiful. Strong. The perfect match for a pure–blood Alpha. Now? They call her the ‘Rejected One.‘ The Alpha’s Discard. They whisper when she walks by–if she even leaves the house anymore.”
“Do you know what they call her now?” my mother asked, her voice suddenly calm and all the more devastating for it. “The Alpha- abandoned failure. That’s your legacy to her, Blackwood,”
Rocco’s control finally broke. “Do you think I don’t regret it?” he shouted, making us all jump. “Do you think I don’t live with this guilt every day?”
“Your regret doesn’t help Kim,‘ my mother replied coldly. “Your regret doesn’t help our family,”
“We understand your anger,” Andy interjected, trying to de–escalate. “But right now, Kim is facing something far more dangerous than social standing. She’s been possessed by someone who will use her body until it’s destroyed.”
I watched my mother carefully and saw genuine fear flash across her face. Despite everything, she did love Kim. That much was real. And strangely, it made me feel both jealous and sympathetic at once. What would it have been like to have that love directed at me?

“Whether you believe it or not,” my mother said softly, “I do love my daughter. Seeing her like this… it breaks my heart.”
“Which daughter?” I couldn’t stop myself from asking. “Kim? Or me? Or both?”
My mother stared at me, caught completely off–guard by the direct question. For once, she had no immediate answer.
The silence that followed was deafening.
