Chapter 232
Kira’s POV
“Which daughter?”
My question hung in the air like a gunshot, leaving deafening silence in its wake. The room suddenly felt airless, as if everyone had collectively stopped breathing.
My mother’s face cycled through emotions so quickly I could barely track them–shock, panic, guilt, and finally settling into a guarded, defensive expression.
Rocco stood by the window, maintaining his distance yet clearly absorbing every word. His expression was serious but curious, watching this family drama unfold with an intensity that made me uncomfortable.
Andy remained beside me, barely a step away, his stance relaxed but vigilant like a wolf ready to protect its pack member.
The silence stretched on, growing heavier with each passing second. I waited, strangely feeling both terrified and calm. Twenty years of questions were finally about to be answered.
“Now isn’t the time to discuss this,” my mother finally broke the silence, her voice pitched higher than normal. “We should focus on finding Kim. That’s what’s important right now.”
“No,” my voice was surprisingly steady and firm. “It’s been twenty years. I think I deserve to know why you only took one daughter with
you.”
My chest tightened and my heart raced, but I forced myself to maintain an outward calm. This question had haunted me for too long to let it be brushed aside again.
Mother sighed, her shoulders slightly slumping. Her fingers unconsciously tucked a strand of silver hair behind her ear, the familiar gesture suddenly triggering buried childhood memories–the same motion as she prepared breakfast in the kitchen, the same motion as she comforted me after I fell. I pushed those memories away.
“You were too young to understand then. It was complicated adult business.”
I felt a familiar frustration rise within me. Always this–treating me like a child incapable of understanding complexity. “I’m an adult now,” I replied calmly, meeting her eyes directly. “Please tell me the truth.”
“If you were worried about father’s influence,” I pointed out the contradiction, amazed at how calm my voice sounded, “why not take both
“Was I not docile enough?” I felt years of repressed emotions erupting like a volcano. “Or was I too much like father for your comfort? Was it because I wouldn’t obey blindly while Kim would do whatever she was told?”
“You don’t understand!” Mother’s voice suddenly rose, a flash of annoyance crossing her face. “William needed an heir who would fit into
the family!
Her words cut off abruptly as she realized what she’d revealed. The atmosphere in the room instantly became more tense. Rocco’s eyebrows raised slightly, a look of understanding crossing his features. Andy moved imperceptibly closer, his presence like a solid wall supporting me when I felt most vulnerable.
I felt a sharp sting, like being pricked with a needle, but strangely, also a weird sense of relief. Finally, the puzzle that had haunted me for twenty years had an answer. Not because I wasn’t good enough, but because I was too much myself.
“So that’s the truth,” I said quietly, my voice calmer than I expected. “I was too strong–willed, not easily controlled.”
Mother opened her mouth to object, then closed it again. Her shoulders slumped slightly in defeat. “Not controlled…” she said softly, seeming to search for less harsh words. “Kim needed more guidance, while you… you were stubborn like Derek. From age three, you wanted to decide everything yourself.”
