Chapter 242

Kira’s POV

A wave of cold washed over me as I stared at Lyra’s smiling face on the screen. I felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water down my spine. My eyes darted from the monitor to Rocco, searching his face for any sign this was all some sick joke.

The way his expression froze, that flash of guilt in his eyes before he could mask it–my stomach dropped. She wasn’t lying.

I curled my fingers into tight fists, my nails digging into my palms. The air in the lab suddenly felt too thick to breathe.

“What proposal, Rocco?” I asked, my voice eerily calm despite the storm raging inside me. “What is she talking about?”

Rocco wouldn’t meet my eyes. “Not now, Kira. We have more important things to deal with.”

“Oh, let me tell her!” Lyra’s voice dripped with delight through the speakers. “I gave my dear brother a chance to win back your love. A little memory manipulation, and you’d forget all the betrayal and pain.”

“Kira, it wasn’t-” Rocco started.

“Wasn’t what?” I stepped back from him, needing distance. My voice shook with fury. “Wasn’t serious? Wasn’t something you actually considered?”

“I would never have done it,” he said, but the words rang hollow.

“But you thought about it.” The realization hit me like a punch to the gut. “You actually considered erasing my memories, taking away my

choices.”

On the screen, Lyra watched our exchange with obvious enjoyment. She leaned forward, Kim’s face twisting into something cruel and

unfamiliar.

“It was just a moment of weakness,” Rocco said, his voice low. “When I saw you with Andy, I—”

“You what?” I snapped, my voice rising. “Decided I didn’t deserve my own mind? My own choices?”

Rocco ran a hand through his hair. “You don’t understand. She caught me at my lowest point.”

I laughed, a harsh sound that bounced off the sterile lab walls. “I understand perfectly. You’re so used to controlling everything and everyone that you can’t stand the thought of me making my own decisions.”

“That’s not fair,‘ he started, but I cut him off.

I forced myself to focus on the immediate threat, though every cell in my body wanted to continue confronting Rocco. “What is Ethan planning? Where is he?
