Chapter 256
Kira’s POV
My heart skipped several beats when Ethan’s eyes locked with mine. The smug smile spreading across his face told me everything I needed to know–my cover was blown, and with it, any element of surprise I’d hoped to maintain.
“Why don’t you come down and join me, Kira?” Ethan called up, his voice eerily calm. “Witness history in the making.”
I scanned the room quickly, calculating my options. The observation platform offered safety but no way to stop what was happening below. The countdown timer on the wall flashed ominously. Whatever Ethan was planning, it was about to happen, and I couldn’t stop it from up here.
“Fuck it,’ I muttered and made my decision.
In one fluid motion, I vaulted over the railing and dropped to the floor below, landing in a crouch at the edge of the main control room.
What I saw stole my breath away. The main control room was massive, dominated by a central energy core that pulsed with unnatural blue light. Around it, ten raised platforms formed a circle, each equipped with what looked like neural interface chairs. The walls were lined with massive display screens, each showing real–time feeds of different werewolf territories. Some already showed packs moving in strange, synchronized patterns, like puppets dancing to the same invisible strings.
And at the center of it all stood Ethan. In his hand was a glowing device, its surface etched with intricate circuitry. His eyes gleamed with a fervor that sent chills down my spine.
“Finally face to face, Kira,” he said, his voice amplified by the room’s acoustics. “Come, take a look at my new world.”
I moved cautiously along the perimeter, keeping my distance but trying to get a better view of the control panel. “Controlling Alphas to rule werewolf society? That’s your grand plan?” I asked, hoping to keep him talking while I assessed the situation.
Ethan’s smile widened. “Not just control. Evolution. Imagine it–a completely unified werewolf society. No infighting, no power struggles, just pure order.”
“You’re talking about enslavement, not unification,” I countered, noticing how the energy field pulsated in a rhythmic pattern. There might be gaps in its coverage.
Ethan shook his head, disappointment flashing across his face. “Your thinking is so limited. I’m not controlling them–I’m liberating them. My consciousness will guide them, but their abilities remain their own.”
As we spoke, I edged closer to one of the subsidiary control panels. The energy field was growing stronger by the second. Whatever window I had was closing fast,
Ethan turned back to the main console and initiated the next phase. The energy surged, flowing into each of the platforms. The countdown accelerated.
I reached for the tranquilizer gun at my hip, aimed quickly, and fired. The dart cut through the air but deflected off the energy field at the last second, spiraling harmlessly to the floor.
“Shit,” I hissed under my breath.
