Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 40

Chapter 40

Kira’s POV

The warm amber glow of the Dark Moon Clubhouse cast a soft light over the bustling room, but it did little to soothe the turmoil inside me. Each step I took felt like trudging through thick mud, my legs still weak and unsteady after the recent treatments. My heart felt unbearably heavy, weighed down by the finality of my divorce, which had been finalized only days earlier.

“I shouldn’t have come,” I murmured to Harper, my voice barely above a whisper as I trailed behind her. She moved through the crowd with ease, greeting nearly everyone with warm hugs and animated chatter. Her natural charm and social grace stood in stark contrast to my desperate wish to vanish into the shadows.

“Nonsense,” Harper replied firmly, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze. “You need this. Staying locked up in that apartment won’t do you any good.”

The word “heal” lingered in the air between us, its meaning layered and bittersweet. I knew deep down that nothing could truly mend my Bondbreak Syndrome, yet Harper was determined to believe otherwise, to push me toward hope.

“Kira Silverstone?” a voice called out, laced with genuine surprise. I turned to find Rebecca, a she-wolf I’d known since childhood, approaching with wide eyes as she took in my appearance. I instinctively touched my thinning hair, painfully aware of how much I’d changed.

“It’s been ages since we last saw you at a gathering… must be three years now,” she said softly, lowering her voice. “I heard you divorced Alpha Blackwood. What happened?”

Before I could respond, two more wolves appeared beside her, their eyes burning with the same unspoken question.

“Yes, I heard that too,” one said bluntly, skipping any formal greeting. “What really went wrong? Everyone thought you two were perfect together.”

My throat tightened painfully at the words. Perfect together. What a cruel joke that was.

“It’s… complicated,” I said, my gaze drifting toward Harper, who had somehow slipped away to the far side of the room.

“I bet it’s because she failed her Alpha,” a sharp, cutting voice interrupted the uneasy silence. “And I heard her father’s business went bankrupt as well.”

The voice belonged to Diana Winters, a she-wolf I’d known from medical research circles. She had always seen me as competition, often coming in second to my proposals and findings. Her amber eyes sparkled with cruel satisfaction as she approached our small group.

“Diana,” I said, striving to keep my voice steady despite my racing heart—a dangerous sign given my condition.

“Must be rough,” she sneered, her tone dripping with feigned sympathy. “Losing both your Alpha and your family’s standing in the same year.”

Diana had always known exactly where to strike, and she’d been waiting years for this moment to see me break. My hands clenched into fists at my sides as I fought the urge to lash out.

Before I could respond, a tall, broad-shouldered wolf stepped between us. “That’s enough, Diana,” he said firmly. “Every wolf faces ups and downs in life.”

I recognized him immediately—Noah Carter, a respected medical researcher who had collaborated with my father on numerous projects and had supported me throughout my early career before I got married. His unexpected intervention was a relief.

“Long time no see, Noah,” I greeted him, grateful for the familiar face amid the tension.

Diana’s smile didn’t waver, but she took a step back. “I’m just surprised to see her here tonight, trying to get a piece of the pie.”

I frowned. “What pie? I thought this was just a regular gathering.”

Her laugh was sharp and mocking. “You don’t know? Everyone’s here for the Silver Lake Werewolf Medical Center project. Don’t tell me you showed up clueless.”

My confusion must have been obvious, because Noah quickly stepped in to explain. “Silver Lake is a major investment initiative where the werewolf community is funding human medical facilities. It’s been in the works for months.”
