Chapter 41
Kira’s Perspective
My heart pounded fiercely against my chest, as if a wild creature trapped inside, desperate to break free. There he was—Rocco—my former husband, the man I once believed I would share forever with. Now, he stood in the doorway, his arm firmly held by my twin sister, Kim. The instant they entered together, the entire energy in the room shifted, as if a storm had just rolled in.
Every werewolf present instinctively bowed their heads in deference to the Alpha. Even the usually proud and confident high-ranking wolves averted their gaze from Rocco’s piercing eyes, a silent acknowledgment of his dominance.
“Alpha Blackwood,” Noah murmured quietly near my ear, his hand still pressed gently against the napkin dabbed on the wine stain spreading across my blouse.
I didn’t need the reminder—I knew exactly who Rocco was. He had been my Luna, my mate, my everything. Now, I was nothing more than a discarded ex-wife, slowly wasting away under the cruel weight of Bondbreak Syndrome.
Rocco’s eyes swept the room with cold precision before settling on me—or more accurately, on Noah’s hand, which was carefully helping to clean my blouse. The air suddenly thickened with an almost suffocating intensity of Alpha rage. Noah must have felt it too because he quickly pulled his hand away, but the damage was already done.
Rocco’s face hardened into a frosty mask, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked as if it might crack. I recognized that expression all too well—he was simmering with fury. I couldn’t understand why he would react with such hostility simply because Noah was helping me with a stain. After all, he was the one who had chosen Kim, the one who had left me behind.
Kim clung tightly to Rocco’s arm as they moved gracefully into the venue. She wore an elegant gown, her hair perfectly pinned up to reveal the delicate curve of her slender neck. She looked radiant—exactly the way I had once dreamed of looking, as a Luna on the brink of motherhood.
Whispers erupted around the room like wildfire. I caught glimpses of people’s eyes flickering between Kim and me, their faces etched with unmistakable shock. Some wolves didn’t even bother to hide their pointed fingers as they muttered among themselves. Though I could hear every word, I wished desperately to be deaf.
“God, they’re identical!”
“This is so strange—Blackwood’s ex-wife and his new mate…”
“Do you think she knows? I mean, the ex—does she realize she’s been replaced by her own twin?”
Those words stabbed at my heart like silver daggers. Yes, I knew. Kim was my twin sister, and though we looked almost indistinguishable, we were completely different souls.
A young wolf finally blurted out, breaking the murmurs: “Why do those two women look exactly alike? Does Mr. Blackwood have a type?”
The tension in the room thickened instantly. I wanted to disappear into the floor, to vanish without a trace. But then Harper rose suddenly and strode confidently to the center of the room.
“Let me clarify,” Harper’s voice rang out, clear and steady. “Kira Silverstone and Kim Hoggins are twin sisters, born of the same bloodline but separated as pups. This kind of thing isn’t unusual in our world.”
She paused, then added with unmistakable sarcasm, “Some people earn their status through talent and hard work, while others… well, through destroying someone else’s bond and family.”
I watched as Kim’s face drained of color, turning ghostly pale, her grip on Rocco’s arm tightening. She clearly did not want the entire pack to know she was the other woman—the one who had slithered into my marriage.
“Ms. Wilson,” Kim forced herself to sound composed, though her voice trembled slightly, “discussing such private matters at a formal gathering is highly inappropriate.”
Harper smiled sweetly, but there was venom beneath it. “Inappropriate? The real inappropriateness is the third party involved. Ms. Hoggins, you seem rather sensitive about this topic. Were you perhaps someone else’s… mistress before?”
