Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 67

Chapter 67

A sudden gust of cold air swept through the room, causing me to flinch involuntarily. Noah’s hand rested gently on my shoulder, grounding me with a quiet reassurance.

“Don’t be afraid,” he murmured softly. “We’re only here to say goodbye.”

The attendant glanced between us, his eyes measuring the tension in the air. “I’ll give you a moment,” he said curtly before retreating, the door closing with a soft thud behind him.

Once the footsteps faded into silence, Noah turned back to face me. “Are you absolutely certain you want to do this yourself? I can verify the body if you prefer.”

I swallowed hard, trying to steady my trembling hands. “I have the medical background,” I reminded him, though doubt flickered in my mind. “I should be able to recognize the signs more accurately.” Taking a deep breath to calm my nerves, I added, “It’s been a long time since I’ve done any clinical work, and honestly, my current condition isn’t helping with my steadiness.”

Noah nodded silently and moved toward the wall lined with cold steel drawers. He scanned the tags carefully before sliding one open. The unmistakable scent hit me immediately — a sickly sweet stench of decay, barely masked by the harsh preservatives. I turned away, fighting the urge to gag.

“Damn,” I muttered under my breath, frustrated by my own reaction. “I thought I was prepared for this.”

“Close your eyes,” Noah instructed gently. “I’ll describe what I see, and you can tell me what to focus on.”

Gratefully, I obeyed, shutting my eyes and shifting into professional mode despite the heaviness in my chest. “Start with her abdomen. Look for stretch marks — silvery lines that could indicate pregnancy.”

I heard the faint rustling of the sheet being pulled back. Noah was silent for a long moment, his voice finally breaking the quiet. “She’s been dead for a while,” he said, his tone clinical and detached. “But I can see what you’re talking about. There are stretch marks on her abdomen — faded, but definitely there.”

Though my eyes remained closed, my mind raced with the weight of what this meant. “Good. Now check for signs of childbirth. The cervix would have scarring from vaginal delivery — usually a horizontal tear in the tissue.”

There was a pause. “I’ll need better lighting for that,” Noah said.
