Chapter 79

Kira’s Perspective

The question lingered between us, thick with tension and unspoken threat. Rocco’s gaze sharpened into cold, piercing slits, his jaw tightening as he patiently awaited my response. I could almost sense the air around us cooling with every heartbeat.

“Tell me,” he murmured, his tone deceptively gentle yet laced with menace, “why did you decide to join the Blackwood Group?”

My throat tightened, dry and constricted. The falsehood I’d been sustaining was beginning to unravel, and I needed to come up with something—anything—quickly. Part of me wanted to keep up the act, but the exhaustion from constant pretending weighed heavily on my spirit.

“I wanted a fresh start,” I said, striving to keep my voice calm and steady. “After everything that’s happened, I needed… a change.”

He didn’t buy it. I saw it in the subtle flare of his nostrils, the predatory stillness that settled over his broad frame. Slowly, Rocco stepped closer, and I instinctively retreated until my legs bumped against the coffee table.

“This is your last chance, Kira,” he warned, closing the distance until only inches separated our faces. His breath brushed against my cheek as he leaned in. “What is your real purpose?”

My heart pounded fiercely against my ribs. “Just to pass the time,” I answered, locking eyes with him despite the fear bubbling inside me.

Suddenly, his hand shot out, gripping my chin with enough force to make me flinch. “You should know by now,” he hissed, “that I despise betrayal and lies more than anything.”

“I’m not lying!” I snapped, struggling to pull my face free from his grasp.

A dark gleam flickered in his eyes, chilling me to the core. His lips curled into a cruel smile, and with a swift motion, his other hand seized the collar of my blouse.

“I don’t believe a word you say,” he growled, tearing open my collar with such violence that buttons scattered across the room.

I gasped, shock and shame flooding through me. “What are you doing?” I tried to shield myself, but he caught my wrists before I could move.

“I don’t care where your heart lies,” Rocco snarled, his eyes coldly tracing over my exposed skin with calculated intent. “All I want is your body.”

His words hit me like a brutal blow. This wasn’t the man I had once loved—this was someone else entirely, cruel and merciless.

“Your desires don’t matter,” he continued, pressing me back against the wall. “Your opinions don’t matter. You exist for my pleasure.”

A fierce flame of anger surged through me, burning away the remnants of my fear. I might be sick, I might be weak, but I refused to let him treat me like this.

“Rocco,” I hissed, glaring up at him, “I’m not that woman anymore. I’m not the girl who lived only for you.”

He laughed, a hollow, mocking sound that echoed in the room. “Do you think I care what kind of woman you are now?”

“Let me go,” I demanded, struggling against his iron grip.

Fueled by fury, I slapped his hand away. “No, Rocco. I’m not that woman anymore—the one who lived just for you. That Kira died the moment you betrayed her.”

His jaw clenched tightly, and for a moment, I feared he might strike me. Instead, he stepped back, his expression thoughtful and calculating.

“I could help you find Ian,” he said, his voice shifting to a more reasonable tone. “The specialist who can treat your father’s werewolf-induced coma.”

My breath caught. Ian was the foremost neurological healer in werewolf medicine. My father had been unconscious for months, and none of the usual treatments had worked.

“He’s the best in our world,” Rocco continued, sensing my interest. “He could counteract the wolfsbane effects. All you have to do is cooperate.”

The bargain he was proposing made me sick to my stomach—my body in exchange for my father’s life. I thought of Lucas, who was already helping me track down Ian. Even Andy had mentioned alternative treatments during our brief conversation at the hospital.
