Chapter 100
I swallow, “Don’t do that again.” I tell him, looking up at the sky for any sign of a lotus, or anything moderately similar but there’s nothing.
Kingston puts a hand on my forehead, “Are you feeling alright? You’re warm, you should have Maddox check you.”
“I’m fine,” I groan, sitting up. “I’m under the sun, that’s why.”
“You shouldn’t be out in the sun like this, it’s not good for you”
“It’s just sun,” I swallow. “What are you doing here anyway? You should be minding your business.”
“I am,” he says, tucking a few hairs behind my ear. “You’re my wife, that makes you more than just my business.”
“If you’ve got nothing important to say, could you just leave me alone, please? I don’t want to talk right now,” I sigh.
“I know that you don’t like very much right now, but you know that you could talk to me, right? I’m sorry I invalidated your feelings about the job.”
“I know.” I nod, “Audrey had some pretty good points about the rogue threat.”
He nods, “She did.”
“She would have made a wonderful Luna,” I tell him, looking up at him. The words sting but I keep going, watching him. “She’s quick on her two brain cells.”
“What?” he frowns, his eyes searching mine like he’s trying to solve a puzzle, one with half the pieces missing.
“Audrey,” I swallow. “She’s great, she thinks about the pack, I see it now, you two go well together. She’s perfect for the role of Luna.”
He sighs, “Aeliana.”
“I’m not angry, Kingston,” I say, slightly shaking my head. My voice is calm, there’s no animosity or jealousy behind it. It was an observation, and I mean it. “I’m just seeing things a little more clearly now, and yeah.” I nod to myself. “Everyone would have been relieved if you had married her, if she were their Luna.”
He pauses, “You’re my Luna. You were chosen by the moon goddess, you’re fated to me.”
I nod, giving him a small smile.
The moon goddess chose me, the bond chose me, but he didn’t. Had I not returned, he would have married her, and everything would be okay again. “I’m just trying to say that at the table, I saw a glimpse of what it is that made you fall for her, she’s not all bad.”
He flinches, but I didn’t even raise my voice at him, I didn’t sound mean either, I was very nice. “My parents invited us to dinner tonight,” he says. “I think my mom misses you already.”
“Not today,” I say softly.
He nods, “I will tell her something came up.” He says, “I’ll get going. I’m going to check on the boarders, I want to enforce more security around the vulnerable towns.”
“Okay.” I nod, unsure of why he’s telling me all this. He doesn’t tell me where he is going, so why is he doing it now?
