We slip on some proper clothes and head downstairs, waiting anxiously for our son, and bonus daughter while sharing our guesses on what he’d like to say to us. Kingston and Aeliana arrive a while later, and Dante and I head outside the moment we get the alert from the patrol guard.

“No, please don’t do this,” she sobs, clutching Kingston’s arm and swaying slightly, it’s almost like he is the only thing keeping her upright.

“Aeliana,” I gasp, taking her in. Her eyes are glassy and devastated.

“Kingston, what’s going on?” Dante asks, watching Kingston drag Aeliana to us.

She stops sobbing when she gets to us, hanging on to his arm and hiccupping. “We’re having a little…” he trails

off, unable to put into words what it is that happened between them. One of them is drunk, and the other is sober, too sober. “I think you should have a word with her, I tried and-”

“I’ve got it from here,” I tell him, reaching for Aeliana’s hand. “Come here, sweetheart.”

“I’m sorry, Luna Estelle.” She sobs, her hand shaking.

Kingston stares at me, confused and tired. “I’ll handle it, go with your father,” I assure him, taking Aeliana inside. I lead her into our living room, Kingston and his father pass us, talking in hushed whispers. “Come on,” I pat her thigh. “Tell me, what did my idiot son do?”

“Everything.” She hiccups.

“Let’s circle back a little. What happened that made you so upset?”

She sniffs, wiping her face on her sleeve. “He bribed people to bring Noah here. She doesn’t even know anyone in Mooncrest aside from me, and he got her a job here at VU,” she swallows. “After he refused me from taking a job at RU, and accused me of having something with Proff, we are just friends.”

Oh, so it’s about another man. “I raised him better than that, I’ll-”

“It’s no use,” she shakes her head. “I don’t want it anymore, I don’t want anything.” She sobs.

I put my arm around her, and she leans on my shoulder. “Oh, my baby.” I rub her arm, trying to console her, but it doesn’t seem to be working. This was bound to happen sooner or later. She’s too calm about everything, too agreeable, and now, I think the pressure got to her, and she snapped. “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to come here and disturb you in the middle of the night.”

“You’re not disturbing. You are welcome here any day, any time, I love having you here.”

“Really?” She sniffs, eyes lifting.

I nod. “Really..”

“I’m such a terrible person,” she hiccups.

“No,” I argue, pulling away so I can look at her. “Why would you think so? Did he say something to you?”

“No,” she sniffs again. “I went out before my vow rehearsal and fitting, I was going to come back, but I just-

“You felt overwhelmed?”

She nods, her gaze low. “I don’t know how to be Luna,” she whispers. “I don’t know how to stand beside him and smile when everyone knows I’m the wrong one. They are still wishing it could be her. She’s freaking perfect and I

I pull her closer and kiss her forehead. “You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be you. No one is perfect, sweetheart. But trying? That’s enough.”

She shakes her head, tears spilling free. “It’s not enough. I see the way they look at Audrey, the way he looks at her. And lately, it’s just been a lot, Luna Estelle. It’s like I ruined everything.”
