Chapter 123
“He gets so mad at me for nothing.”
“Because he cares,” I tell her. “And he is not upset with you. If he were, he wouldn’t have brought you here. But he did, because he is concerned about you. It’s nothing more.”
Her eyes widen, “About me?” She gasps.
“Yes,” I smile. “Tell you what. I see you need a break, so why don’t I move the inauguration up a few days?”
“Really?” She chokes out. The desperation in her voice tells me everything I need to know. It’s not all about my son, it’s the crushing weight of the responsibilities to come. I’ve been there.
“Yes, your health matters.” I caress her hair. “You don’t seem to be at your best.”
“I know, and I’m so sorry, Luna Estelle,” she sniffs. “I’m really trying, but…”
“I know,” I smile. “I’ve been there, Luna jitters, but don’t worry, you’ll make a fine Luna, hmm?”
That breaks her again, and she starts sobbing. “I don’t want to disappoint you.”
“Oh dear, as your mom, you would never disappoint me,” I tell her, my voice soft and low. “You’ll understand when you have littles of your own someday. Our kids are always first, their happiness.”
She nods, “I miss my mom.”
“Pandora?” I frown, I assumed they weren’t close when Kingston told me to keep her off his property if I could. ” Dear, we can call her. I’m sure she won’t mind.”
“Not her,” she swallows, something broken clouding her gaze. My heart aches for her, she needs more than the few days I can offer, more than just time. “I miss my mom, the woman who loved and carried me, I wish she could have taken me with her.”
I gasp, “Oh no, sweetheart. If she did, we’d have lost you.”
“No one really cares,” she whispers. “I only matter when I’m useful.”
“You matter every day,” I say, squeezing her hand. “No one in this pack matters more than you do, you’re Aeliana Vale, first of her name, thirteenth Luna of Mooncrest, but you won’t have to worry about filling those shoes, yours are big enough.”
“I will fail this pack, and you’ll feel wronged for believing I could be something.”
“I know you can be a great Luna,” I confidently tell her. “You were born for this, Aeliana. The moon goddess doesn’t make mistakes.”
She lets out a broken laugh, brief. “She does with me. She mated me to Kingston, that’s the biggest mistake she could ever make.”
“He loves you.”
“No.” She says with a hiccup.
“Yes, has he not told you?” I frown, anyone with a working pair of eyes or even half the vision can tell how much the two love each other.
Aeliana sucks in breath. “I know that he hates me, he’s only putting up with me, but what he really wants is her.
