Alpha’s Rue: His Shunned Luna (Athena Enchanted) novel Chapter 155

Chapter 155

I don’t know how I find the strength, but I’m moving before I can register it. I can hear people calling after me, but their words are nothing but whispers. I shuffle through the crowd, rushing out the door, the route I’m going barely visible.

Someone taps me on the shoulder, the hand firm, and steadying. “River is driving,” Maddox says, guiding me towards the car.

The drive to the northern road is hell.

I sit in the passenger seat, staring out at the road like I can make it move faster. It hurts to breathe when she who I now breathe for isn’t here.

“Alpha bro,” Damien clears his throat, trying to sound neutral. “You know, A is tough,” he says, trying to convince himself too, but the worry in his voice gives him away. “She’s survived worse, for example, you.” He says. “She has survived you and your grumpiness. You’re more dangerous.”

I can’t answer.

My throat feels closed.

All I can see is Aeliana, the way she smiled at me earlier from across the room while I fought every bone in my body to join her and her friend. That can’t be my last memory of her. It can’t be the last time that I see her. She’s too young, she has her whole life ahead of her, a life with me, one I won’t have either if she-

“She’s alive,” Maddox says, tapping my shoulder. “Has your bond severed? The bond would’ve snapped if she weren’t okay. You’d feel it, and all of us who submitted to her would feel it.”

Gods. I want to believe him.

I need to believe him. But the silence in the bond is deafening. She never lets me in her head, but when I touch the mark I earned this morning, it glows, pulsing low, faint. So faint that I don’t know if it’s really there or if I’m clinging to hope so hard that I have begun to hallucinate.

“It’s all my fault.” I swallow, “I gave her my car keys, I should have been with her. I should-”

“King, you can’t control things like this,” Maddox says, and I hate that I can’t control this. I hate that I let this happen to her. “It’s not your fault, no one could have predicted this.”

“I need her,” I choke out. “I can’t lose her, not again. Not when she’s giving me another chance.”

“You won’t,” River says. “We’re almost there.” She says softly, proceeding to honk at the driver in front of her who honks right back. “Fucking drive!” She screams.

The car moves a little faster, she swerves into the other lane, and we still wind up in traffic. It’s taking too long, I open the door before the car comes to a full stop. “Kingston!” Maddox gasp, “Hey, where-”

I don’t hear the rest of it, I’m already running past every car in my way. I run. I don’t know how far I run, but I run to her, knocking down a few people along the way who I can only hope will understand why my manners have escaped me.

It’s not until I reach the scene of the accident that my resolve nearly breaks. My car is crushed in the back, like someone had purposefully hit it several times, and for their sake, they’d better pray I never find them.

People have my car surrounded, there’s an ambulance nearby from one of the human hospitals close by, but no one is doing anything, I see no sign of urgency, no sign of Aeilana.

Fear moulds with my bones as I check the car, peeking inside. There’s no sign of absolute wreckage or blood, and that should relieve me, but it doesn’t. It’s the scream that comes just as I round up the car.

It’s her voice.

It’s my wife, my mate, my Aeliana.
