For a moment, no one speaks. There’s only hush whispers, and I can hear it before they speak. “Audrey Cole,” someone blurts out. Too fast, too nervous for me to know whose voice it was.
I lean back in my seat, raising an eyebrow at my father who shrugs. “Me?” Audrey gasps in her seat. “Oh no, no no.” She says with a choked laugh. “That’s...no thank you.”
Maddox kicks my foot under the table and nods at Audrey, then her Father. The scheme is obvious, Audrey was supposed to be my Luna, she was going to be my chosen, and had I marked her before I did Aeliana, then she would be Luna, but that ship sank. Some people have had a hard time accepting it, namely her father, and apparently Elder Campbell and the others.
“Let's not pretend,” Gamma Venice says. “You are far equipped, for years you trained for this, you know the ins and outs of a good Luna, she merely stepped into it, and now she’s losing her mind.”
Rowan grabs my sleeve before I move, keeping me in place. “She can’t replace my daughter,” Gamma Hartley snarls.
“She will not replace my Luna,” I repeat.
“I agree with Gamma Hartley and Alpha Kingston,” Audrey says, squirming in her seat. “I’m not worthy of replacing Luna Aeliana. I may have trained for years, but she’s a natural at this.”
“Audrey, what are you doing?” Gamma Cole snaps. “We have faith in you, the pack needs you to step up.”
Audrey shakes her head, “And I have faith in her, Aeliana is a true Luna, you can’t replace that, not with me or anyone.” She tells them, the first sensible thing I've heard from her in the last twenty-four hours. “I understand the situation is critical, but replacing her isn’t the way to go about this. It’s just not done.”
“No one is replacing her.” Elder Winston says.
“Of course not,” Audrey snickers. “Alpha Kingston won’t take a second, he won’t want anyone else by his side, and honestly, I would fight anyone else if he considered it.”
My lips twitch with a smile.
I couldn’t recall why I was with her or the little things about her that made me choose her as a second, but I see it again, the way she spoke up for what was right. I was fully prepared to be annoyed with her, but I’m impressed by her common sense.
