“I felt bad,” Damien tells him. “She wanted to come home.”

“And you think I don’t want that for her? Every fucking second she’s away hurts.” He hisses. “I haven’t slept a wink since she left the house. I keep wondering and fearing exactly what happened here today!”

“I’m sorry, okay. But what was I supposed to do? She wasn’t happy, she said they drug her every night.”

“They’re sleeping pills,” he grits through his teeth. “Maddox has looked into every damn pill they give her. Do you think I’d just let them experiment on her? They are helping her, those pills help her sleep.”

“Well, what about the doctor extending her stay?” Damien counters, “And Mama bird said that—”

“What bird?” Kingston frowns.

“The lady at the clinic,” he says. “She told us no one ever leaves, and—”

“The nurse?”

“No, the patient, she’s got green eyes, long brunette…” he pauses when he realises how gullible he sounds right now.

Kingston lets put a dark chuckle that sends a chill through me. “Let me get this straight? The reason Aeliana tried to kill herself was that you listened to the opinion of a patient?” He asks, swinging at Damien before he gets a chance to explain himself.

I scramble for the car door, but it won't open. “Leave it,” Maddox says, his voice low, scared almost.

‘It's not his fault,” I sniff. “I wanted to get out, I was desperate, and they just wanted to help.”

“I know,” he sighs. “I’m sorry you feel this way, Ellie. But you’ll be home in no time.”

No time is right.

There is, in fact no time in the near future in which I will be back home. “Aeliana was scared she wouldn't leave,” Damien says. “She doesn’t feel like she is making progress, and she’s so sad, King.”

“Of course she is,” Kingston sneers. “She wants to be home, she wants to live, but if she doesn't get better, she might not get the chance! Do you not get it?!”
