Alpha’s Rue: His Shunned Luna (Athena Enchanted) novel Chapter 403

“Where were you when she was attacked?”

All colour drains from her face. “I—”

“Kingston,” Maddox laughs, hitting my chest. “Sorry, he’s a little protective of her, you get it, huh? Mate bonds.” He says, as if trying out the word.

“Actually…”

“What did you want to speak about?” I demand. They’re clearly flirting in some weird way, and I don’t care for it. I want to see Aeliana, and I want to know what it is that she couldn’t say before. “Speak fast, clear, and wise.”

“Hey, calm down.” Maddox frowns. “You’re scaring the lady.” He steps forward again, grinning from ear to ear. “Nurse Evelyn, you wanted to see him in person..”

“Yeah,” she swallows. “I might be overstepping, but I think you should pull Luna Aeliana out.”

“Why?” I frown. “Last time we spoke, you were not for the idea of me demanding her discharge on her thirtyeth day here.” I remind her, a very fresh conversation that occurred a day before Aeliana escaped. “You said she needed more than just seclusion and a familiar place.”

“She does,” she nods. “I’m still for that idea, but I’m scared of what might happen if I’m not here. She has a different night nurse, and while I have full faith in my colleague, it doesn’t ease my worry.”

“How sweet,” Maddox chimes in. “Isn’t she sweet, Kingston? Caring about her patients like that…”

I ignore him. “Is your supervisor in today?”

“Yes, Alpha.” She nods, her cheeks flushed from the compliments that Maddox gave her. “He is in his office.”

“I’ll see him.” I turn away, giving them a proper chance to flirt when she should, in fact, be taking care of Aeliana.

“Wait, before you go.” Evelyn blurts out, once again sounding just like she did on the phone. “There’s one more thing.”

I pause, an eyebrow raised at her. “Which is?”

“Jesus Christ, have some patience.” Maddox hisses. “You’re intimidating her.”

Her head moves left to right, and then she pulls something out of her pocket. A folded paper. “This,” she swallows, handing it to me with trembling hands.

“What’s this?” I frown, my patience wearing thin now. She isn’t talking fast enough for me.

“Lab tests.”

“Yes, Alpha.” Evelyn nods. “Five weeks along, or likely six.”

“Wow.” Maddox whistles.

“One of the patients pointed it out,” Evelyn tells us. “I didn’t know earlier because she’s not showing any signs or symptoms.”

“I am,” I swallow, the wheels finally turning. All the nausea, the stomach cramps, it’s all her. I wasn’t the one sick, I was feeling Aeliana through the bond. The bond transferred it to me.

“Sorry?” Evelyn frowns.

“How accurate is this?” Maddox asks.

“She is pregnant,” I clear my throat. “That’s why I’ve been sick, that wasn’t me, that was the bond,” I tell him, his eyes widening with recognition the more I speak. “There are no signs because they’re with me, I’ve been throwing up, I’ve been restless.”

“Congratulations?” Maddox frowns.

“Yes,” I nod to myself. “I need to speak to James.”
