“I can worry,” she groans. “s what parents do, no? You’re worried too, so why the double standard?”

“You’ve got a lot on your plate.”

“So do you!”

“Calm down.” I coo.

“You’re doing it again!” She snaps. “I’m very calm. You are the problem here. You think I need to be babied, you have peopl walking on eggshells around me, and you’re walking on shards of glass, but it’s not helping me. I feel even more vulnerable feel weak when you do that, and it’s because that’s how you see me now. If you don’t think I’m capable of handling then I do see us having a child together, not now.”

“I’m sorry, I will do better, Aeliana,” I say, my tone pleading. “It’s just a little hard for me after everything you’ve been through, I’ve put through enough, so I want to make sure nothing else-”

“I can’t change what happened to me, King.” She swallows, a familiar pain twinkling in her gaze. I feel it in my bones. I can barely look at her now. “I’m sorry if it’s affecting you, but this shit always happens to me. How do you think I feel? You want to move on from it, and I’m trying, okay? I really am, and I want to get better for my baby. I want to do everything I can, too.”

“I know,” I nod. I’ve been a little too overprotective lately, and again, I thought I was doing what’s right for her, but she hate “I won’t hide anything else from you, and if I treat you with more caution than necessary, I need you to smack me in the face.

“What?” She blinks. “Are you crazy?”

“It’ll be a reminder that I’m acting crazy, and I’ll drop it,” I tell her.

She stares me up and down, “I’ll tell you.” She frowns. “And on some occasions, I will definitely punch you in the face.”

“I’ll call the doctor back in, and we can hear everything together” I tell her, rising to fetch Doctor Bridget again. I find Bridge waiting at the reception, and she’s more than understanding of why we had to stop before.

She preps Aeliana a second time and this time I stay within my limits. She shows us the baby again, barely visible on the monitor, but it’s there. I’ve seen a couple of ultrasound images, and years ago, when my mom had my youngest sister, I went her first ultrasound with her. She wasn’t exactly further along than Aeliana is, but I remember Vittoria being bigger than our baby looks.

“Baby looks great,” Bridget says.

“But?” Aeliana trails off.
