“And you too shall be punished for your silence,” I tell her. The only reason she started talking was that she saw how my patience ran out with Audrey. For all I know, they did this together. Audrey didn’t say it, but they’re best friends for a reason. She too has been taking things from Aeliana since her mother married Gamma Hartley. “You let your sister suffer,” I swallow, my mind going back to all the times when she could have spoken up, and recently, when she spoke up in that meeting. “Aeliana could have died in that place.”

“I tried to help her escape, but you came.” She swallows, “She had to save Father.”

“One intention of a good deed does not erase the hell that my Aeliana has been through. She was bullied,” I grunt. “And you people painted her as the bully. Do you see how your silence contributed?”

“It used to be harmless pranks, you all know this.”

I nod, I recall the pranks.

They were always overlooked, and the elders would claim it was just children being children, but nothing about the way Aeliana would cry after they played tricks on her was funny. They’d trip her, glue gum in her hair, and everyone said the children were being mischievous. They only stopped when Maddox, Rowan, and I started retaliating on her behalf. It took one of them waking up bald and Aeliana having her arm in a cast before their parents stepped in and forbade them from playing pranks on other people.

“They were harmless to you both and not her. Aeliana was hurting, she hated those pranks,” I say. “What else have you and your crazy friend done?”

She pauses, chewing on her bottom lip.

“Brandon,” She says. “He had a crush on Aeliana, but she was never interested in him.”

“Your mate?” Rowan asks her.

She nods, “I didn’t know it, but he was only with me to get close to her, because Audrey convinced him she liked him and would want him if he was with me.”

I suck in a breath. “This is fucked up.”

“On that night… of the party, Audrey said she would stay back and sleep with him, so we dragged her out with us because I didn’t want her stealing him from me.” She swallows, “I was wasted, and it wasn’t until the next morning that I remembered Aeliana hadn’t come home with us, and we’d gone pretty far.” She says, her hands shaking. “I’m not going to lie and say that I cared because she’d be in trouble, because I liked it when she was in trouble with Father. Because then I got some praise, and I know it’s sick but-”

“They always praised you,” Rowan says.

“I’m not your therapist, Seraphine.” I sigh. “Give me the important facts, and if I find out you lied-”

Her eyes widen. “I won’t lie,” she chokes out. “I’m telling the truth.”
