“Can’t survive this?” My mother scoffs, protectively stepping between Pandora and Aeliana. “What about Aeliana?” She snaps. “Have you considered what she must have gone through, Pandora?”

Her eyes go wide, “I-I apologise,” he stutters. “But Seraphine-”

“Nothing,” my mother barks out, her tone commanding silence. “Your daughter is not innocent, so stop acting like she is because come rain, hail, or sunshine, Seraphine will pay for her crimes.” She tells her,” And don’t you dare coax my daughter into feeling guilty just because you failed to raise Sera the right way.”

“They’re both my daughters.”

“Something you didn’t consider before,” she scoffs, staring at her with disdain. Over time, all three of these women have become friends, but that friendship died the moment my mother heard what their daughters did to Aeliana. “You don’t get to choose when they’re both yours. When those rumours began to spread, you didn’t step in for her, you simply claimed she wasn’t yours by blood. Your blood had wonderful children, now see what your wonderful kids were up to.” She shakes her head, “You go about bragging about your perfect daughters, but see what they’ve done.”

“Estelle,” she gasps.

“I have many children,” my mother says, her voice cracking and her hand tightening around Aeliana’s. Aeliana needed a parent to protect her years ago, but she’s gotten one just now. “Mine, my nieces, my nephews…” he trails off. “I’ve raised over ten kids in my household, but you know what? Not a single one of those children could be suffering, and I not notice it. And you had how many? Four? And still you didn’t notice how my sweet girl was suffering.” 2

“She is a very reserved child,” Pandora swallows. “I never discriminated between them.”

“You did,” my mother counters. “And had you not? This wouldn’t have happened. All you had to do was stand up for your daughter and listen to her, but you let the world tell you lies about the child you raised, and you believed them.”

Pandora nods, “I agree I failed miserably, but please, my Sera is innocent.”

“She’s guilty too!” Mom snaps. “She will have to endure this much. It’s nothing compared to the hell my daughter went through.”

“But she told Kingston everything.”

“And how does that change things? She was silent for years.”

Pandora’s mouth repeatedly opens and closes, yet nothing comes out. When she runs out of excuses for her poor parenting and favouritism, she turns to Aeliana again. “Aeliana.” She whispers, her voice broken and her gaze pitiful.

I don’t speak, I keep my distance until it’s time for me to punch Gamma Hartley for pleading Seraphine’s case after having promised Aeliana he would be a better father to her. Unfortunately, he doesn’t speak.
