“Are you?” I counter, turning back to face him.

He shrugs, taking a deep breath that seems to do nothing for his mood. “Can I ask you something? You don’t have to answer, but-”

“Go ahead,” I nod. I can already hear the question before he speaks. I’ve been asking Noah the very same question, and she doesn’t have a consistent answer. She isn’t sure of anything at the moment.

“Do you think there’s any chance she’ll forgive me?” he asks. His voice is low and careful, like he already has an answer, but doesn’t know how to take it. “For everything..”

I shrug, I can’t speak for Noah, but I can speak for myself. “I’m not sure, but being with you made Noah suffer a lot. I’m not trying to make you feel bad, but she took the bigger hit. You and Dani were obviously hurt too, but it’s not the same. You knew you were bonded to her, but she didn’t. She went from feeling annoyed at herself for wanting you, to feeling embarrassed, and ashamed for sleeping with you, to feeling confused now.” I swallow, “I know you didn’t plan on hurting her, but you lied to her, and no matter how much both you and Dani might care about her, you didn’t show it before. She will always feel out of place with you two because you two had a bond that was already complete before she came along, and you tried to keep it that way, but now you want her in it after treating her like a spare.” I tell him. “You need to understand how she feels, more than hurt, she is scared. She will always wonder if you love her just as much as you love Danielle, if you’re only accepting her because she’s hurt, and you need your egos stroked.” 5

“I love her,” he says. “And I can’t speak for Dani, but we want this. We want to give our bond the chance it deserves, to live how the goddess intended we do when she split the bond in three.” 1

“Well, you acted like you were the ideal bond by not telling her. Noah can’t feel it. She can’t feel the things that you both do, and she’ll always feel secondary to your first mate. She’s felt it once already.”

He shakes his head, “I never meant to do that to her. I was trying so hard not to hurt either one of them, but I still did. Dani was insecure about adding someone else to our bond, and I thought it was okay to let things stay as they were. Noah had a life before us, and I didn’t want to tie her down to something so complicated.” He gulps, “But somehow, I did. I couldn’t control myself, and I let us get close enough for the bond to get stronger. Everything I feared would happen has happened, and I don’t know how to fix it.”

“You can’t,” I quietly say. “And I understand where you’re coming from, but it feels like you chose, Row. You and Dani chose each other the moment you kept the bond from her.” 6
