“Out with it,” I shrug. “He wouldn’t go if you asked, so just tell him.”

“Okay then, I’ll find him.” He sighs, trying to get up, but I slap a hand on his knee. I did see Maddox early this morning, and he was definitely running low on sleep. We didn’t interact, I hid so Evelyn wasn’t shy or uncomfortable.

“He’s asleep.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I saw him and Evelyn returning from their party, or club outing. They both looked pretty tired, but not exactly wasted.”

Kingston hums. “Something is going on between those two.”

“You think?” I snort out a laugh. “They’re definitely together, or trying to get together. I don’t know which one, but they’re certainly past the awkward flirting and case studies together.”

“I think he really likes her.”

“Of course he does. Evelyn is nice.” I smile, and so is Maddox. I have always hoped that he would find someone gentle enough to handle his soft heart and maybe then he’d stop pretending he loved hookups more than the love he was craving. “She was kind to me when I thought my world had ended, and every time I felt discarded, she showed me I wasn’t.” I swallow. “It was infuriating that she didn’t let me suffer in peace, but she’s good. There are very few people out there like her.”

“She’s smart too.” He says, “Of course you’re the smartest, baby, but what I mean is she’s Maddox smart. They’re both in the same field, and he’s always so excited when he talks to her. It’s like they have a secret language that no one understands enough

of.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet,” I pout. I noticed that myself because when I’m not with him, I’m with Evelyn, and Maddox likes to be around her. “Why don’t we have that?”

“We do. I could always read you better than anyone, and I still can. We don’t need to share a medical degree to bond, Ellie. We share a pack, a baby, and our messy inner circle.”

“That’s true,” I nod. “I feel bad for Evelyn though.”
