I wake up to an empty bed.

The worst way to wake up on one’s birthday if you ask me, more so when you expect to have your mate beside you, waking you up with kisses, or at the very least with a cupcake and the low hum of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, “because that was my preferred birthday song when I was little.

Kingston has sung it to me every morning. He would sneak into my bedroom early on my birthday morning, or spend the night just so he could sing to me and give me a strawberry–frosted cupcake. I was hoping we could keep that tradition alive since it’s my first birthday with him after so long, but no, Kingston isn’t here today.

In the space where he should be, there’s a bouquet of plumeria, lotus, and my two favourite lities. They almost make up for the fact that he isn’t here, those and the jewellery box beside them. The box itself has a tiny diamond in the business logo, so I know what it is before I even open it. I sit up and grab the box, a gorgeous diamond necklace staring at me when I open it. King knows I don’t like things that are over the top, so it means so much that I’m staring at a single clear stone. “Pretty,” I smile to myself, watching how the diamond catches the light and throws tiny rainbows across my palm.

Under the box is a little folded note addressed to ‘Siren‘

[Happy birthday, baby.

Sorry I had to head out to the office, but I’ll be back to pick you up for our dinner date. Love you, don’t sulk, & I made you breakfast.

Signed Yours. Just that, no name, no initial, just “Yours.” I throw it away before I start to smile at how cute that is.
