I feel like a student awaiting his grade. I’m hoping she doesn’t get upset because she wanted to spend the day at home. She was too tired to plan a party, so I took it on and asked Noah for help with the little things that may have changed over the years that I’m yet to know about.

“Why are you giving me your new restaurant?” She frowns, her eyes flickering back to the document in her hand to make sure she didn’t read it wrong. She didn’t. This felt right. She needed to own it, she inspired its success. Every brand name I put down with her in mind has succeeded with so little effort. “Kingston?”

“It’s yours.”

“Why?” She chokes, “I don’t need you to gift me a restaurant, King. I don’t even know how to cook.”

“Everything I own is yours. I know you don’t want me to put that in writing, but I wanted you to be the sole owner of this branch.” I tell her, “It’s special.”

“How?”

“Every year on your birthday, there’s a new restaurant, hotel, or lodge that opens that day.” I tell her, “When I opened the first one, I was missing you. I didn’t know how to reach out or if you’d let me, so I found a way to gift you without getting to you. The Lotus, and now that you’re here with me again, I couldn’t think of a better gift than the one that kept me going even when I tried not to care about you.’

Her mouth falls open, “I-for me?” She swallows, tears gleaming in her eyes. “That’s-I don’t know what to say,” she sucks in a breath, tears falling now. I use my thumbs to wipe them away before they can get to her
