Rowan comes in, “Thanks for-“he pauses when he sees Danielle inside the house. Surely he didn’t think I’d leave her out in the cold alone, I’m outgrown my pettiness.

“We’re playing a game, sit,” I tell him. “I’ll grab some snacks.”

He makes his way to the living room and settles on the sofa, watching Danielle set up. I grab everyone a snack, some yoghurt for me, and water for Rowan so he can sober up.

I go easy on everyone the first round, and when Rowan wins that one, he stops playing so he can keep his dignity. Anastasia, Danielle and I play a couple of times before Anastasia excuses herself and it’s just us three. Danielle is better than she remembers, she wins once, and every round after that ends in a tie. We have to make Rowan play to make it more fun, and he refuses, choosing to watch instead.

“I have Monopoly,” I say. “Will you play, Row? I’m not a pro at that one, I somehow wind up in jail a lot.”

“Oh,” Danielle gasps. “It’s quite late, we should get going now.”
