Chapter 528
“Of course I do, just not this one.” He groans. “Things are going really great right now. I know this probably sounds selfish, but I don’t want to ruin what I’ve found with Evie.”
I pause. “Evie?”
“Evelyn.” He clarifies. “I don’t see her staying if I’m raising a baby. It’s too much of a commitment.”
I nod. Maddox is scared of commitment. It’s no surprise he hasn’t picked a chosen mate all these years. He wasn’t even hoping for a fated mate. He was just happy he didn’t have to commit.
“No,” she shakes. “I don’t think I want a kid. Not now. Someday, sure, I do see myself and Evie having a couple of kids down the road.”
“Do you hear yourself?” I lean forward, stunned at the ease with which he just admitted wanting kids with Evelyn. I don’t think he realises it yet.
“I do. I’m saying I don’t want to have to keep a child I might deeply resent for everything I’d give up. I want my first pup to be with my mate.”
“You want Evelyn to be your mate,” I say. This time, it’s not a question but understanding. “I didn’t know you felt this way about her. I thought you were still having fun.”
“I’m not. I mean, I am, but it’s not like that.” He swallows, his lips with a smile. “I think I’m falling in love with her. She’s good for me, and I’m trying to be good for her too. I like who I am with her, how easy it is…” He trails off. “Even the silence feels surreal just because I’m with her, you know what I mean?”
I nod. I know exactly what he means. He has found his person. It could either be a great friendship or a great love, and right now, it’s clear love on his end.
“I should ask her to be my mate,” he whispers. “I’m just nervous about it.”
My head turns to the door, and I see Aeliana standing there with wide eyes and a half-eaten plum.
“Carry on. I’ll come back later.”
“No, come in,” Maddox tells her. “I need to hear your opinion on something.”
Aeliana stares between us before stepping inside. I expect her to come and sit in my lap or on the armrest, but instead, she sits next to Maddox.
“You okay?”
Aeliana stares between us before stepping inside. I expect her to come and sit in my lap or the armrest but instead, she sits next to Maddox. “You okay?”
He nods, “My sins have caught up with me, I’ve been sentenced to hell.”
“Could be worse,” Aeliana sighs. “Could be Kingston, and I’d have to leave this pack without a Luna.”
“Oh, that’d be a tragedy,” Maddox snorts out a nervous laugh. “I’m glad to be of sacrifice, then, but what do I do, Aeliana?”
