Chapter 21 After She’s Gone
When Baldwin returned home again, the entire house was silent-eerily so. Not a single sound. Not a single soul.
The cold air inside clung to the faint trace of Florence’s perfume.
It still lingered, just like her presence once had. Before, even though he rarely came home, she was always there waiting.
She would look at him with those warm, hopeful eyes, and just a glance from him was enough to make her happy for days.
But now, the house without her felt hollow and cold.
Every room, from the bedroom to the study to the bathroom, had been carefully arranged by her.
Back then, she had asked him to go furniture shopping together, but he brushed her off, saying he was busy.
When he returned, everything had already been perfectly set up.
She knew every inch of that home, down to the smallest detail.
But now, everything was still in its place-except for the person who had made it feel like home.
Even though he had already searched the house, Baldwin couldn’t shake the feeling that she might’ve left something behind-some clue, some sign-anything he could use to find her.
Trembling, he began tearing through the place again.
The closet, behind the desk, even in the cracks of the door-everywhere.
By the end of it, the house was in chaos, but there was still no trace of her.
Finally, he collapsed onto the messy bed, searching through the tangled sheets like a man drowning. But there was nothing.
A sharp, piercing ache stabbed at his heart-as if a thousand silver needles were driving into him all at once.
He realized, with a cold and crushing clarity, just how determined she had been to leave.
Baldwin had imagined a hundred different reactions she might have had when he proposed breaking the mate bond. Maybe she would cry, scream, or even try to end her life.
But none of that happened.
In the end, she did just one thing.
She quietly drank the potion, severed the bond completely, and left him behind.
Baldwin didn’t sleep a wink that night.
The next day at the office, his beta assistant was waiting at the door. “Alpha, the meeting at three-”
“Cancel it,” Baldwin cut him off, rubbing his temples.
