Chapter 20 A New Path Forward
Three hours later, the golden glow of sunset streamed through the glass dome of the exhibition hall, leaving deep shadows on the floor.
Axel watched Florence as she studied the exhibits intently. After a moment, he spoke, “By the way, we can go ahead and sign the contract now.”
Florence paused, then quickly reached into her bag.
The documents inside were pristine, neatly tucked into a folder.
“You really are a man of your word,” she said calmly.
Axel took the contract and the pen she handed over. “Ms. Wraith, it’s rare to see someone this prepared. Ever considered switching sides? Come work for me-I’ll pay you more than Ms. Bird.”
Florence chuckled at the playful comparison. “I just like being ready for everything. But thank you; that’s very flattering.”
“Well, now I’m curious.”
Axel suddenly set down the pen, his gaze locking onto hers. “A woman like you-why did you suddenly leave the Nightfang Pack?”
The air went still.
Florence stared at the terms on the contract.
Baldwin’s cold voice replayed in her mind-how he’d told her, without emotion, that their mate bond was over.
She lowered her eyes. “I just wasn’t satisfied there. So I figured it was time to get out and try something new.”
“Are you running away from your life?”
Axel’s tone was teasing at first, but when he saw the shadow pass over her expression, he
softened.
“You have no idea how many wolves idolize Axel in Hegreau. His influence is insane!”
“Really? That’s pleasing to hear.” Florence leaned against the headboard, smiling faintly as she gazed out at the foreign city’s nighttime skyline.
“But honestly, he didn’t seem that difficult to deal with. He’s actually kind of fun.”
After the call ended, the room went quiet again.
Florence tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Axel’s words kept echoing in her mind.
Eventually, she got up and pulled open the curtains. The moon hung high in the sky, casting its silver light equally over every werewolf in the world.
Maybe Axel was right. Maybe life wasn’t meant to be spent trapped in the past.
This time, she was going to live for herself.
