Alexis and Kent laughed and joked together, and Kent’s face showed a warmth and affection I hadn’t seen in years.
I stood frozen, watching them walk away hand in hand. A bitter ache settled in my chest.
This was the man I had loved for ten years, the father of my child. The love I thought we shared turned out to be nothing but an illusion.
My vision blurred, and suddenly, a familiar voice reached my ears.
“Ma’am, do you need any help?”
I turned and saw Howard standing not far away, holding two bags of groceries in one hand.
He looked surprised at my red-rimmed eyes but thoughtfully handed me a tissue. “Here, wipe
your eyes.’
I felt dazed, waving him off as I headed toward my car.
He gently grabbed my arm, his eyes filled with a kind of concern that I couldn’t quite read. Let me walk you home.”
In that moment, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Any stranger could show concern, yet the one closest to me had chosen betrayal.
I remembered how guilty I had felt before for almost making a mistake, and now that my persistence seemed like a joke, the sting was unbearable.
I refused Howard’s offer and wandered home in a daze.

When Mom saw me return, her brow furrowed in concern. “Where have you been all this time?
I had grown up in a single-parent household, raised by Mom alone.
At our wedding, Kent had vowed to care for me for life, yet just a few years in, everything had changed…
“Mom…”
Seeing the concern on her face, all the emotions I had been holding back finally broke, and I began to cry quietly.
Mom was startled. She quickly put Olive back in bed. “What happened?”
I didn’t hide anything, telling everything I had witnessed.

“How could he do this to you?”
Mom was furious. She immediately grabbed my hand, ready to confront him.
“Let’s
We’re going to confront him! You just had a baby, and he’s already cheating so openly. How are you supposed to live like this?”
“Mom!” I pulled her hand back. A mix of grief and determination flashed in my eyes. “I’ll handle this myself.”
On the way home, I had already made up my mind. Since they betrayed me first, there was no reason for me to be the bigger person.
I would take Olive with me, and the marriage would end.
They would have to pay.
Once home, I called Kent. “Where are you?”
