Chapter 8

Kent’s hand froze, a flicker of panic crossing his face, though he quickly masked it. He gave me a sly smile. “How did you know I brought you a gift?”
After saying that, he kept his eyes fixed on my face, like he was trying to read me.
I smirked. If he didn’t want to be honest, I’d wait for the truth to come out in time. After all, I had already given him a chance. If he had just been honest, we could have parted amicably.
But since it had come to this, I wouldn’t hold back anymore.
While he was at work, I took out the hidden cameras I had bought and placed them in the living room and bedroom. Since I didn’t have proof yet, I would start collecting it. Only by
proving his affair could I feel confident when claiming property and custody of Olive.
I’d arranged for Alexis to come over that weekend and had even gotten her a little gift.
“Maddy, you’re the best!” Alexis squealed over the phone, full of excitement.
I smiled coldly. I couldn’t tell if she was thrilled about the gift or excited to see her boyfriend.
That weekend, Kent just so happened to be off work.
Alexis arrived on time, and I had already bought some wine and prepared a hearty meal.
“Wait a sec, I’ve got one more dish to finish,” I said, smiling faintly, and went into the kitchen
while they sat on the couch.
I knew Alexis too well. She was constantly chasing thrills.
As expected, when I checked the hidden camera footage on my phone, the two of them were already all over each other on the couch. By the time I brought out the dishes, they pretended as if nothing had happened.
I thought it was ridiculous. They’d show their true colors soon enough.
I had decanted the wine in advance. Since I couldn’t drink while nursing, I encouraged them to drink instead.
When the timing was right, my phone rang.
“Mom, what’s up?” I said. “Got it. I’ll head back and check on things.”
I apologized to the two of them, my tone hurried. “Olive’s been crying. I need to go check on her.”
“What? I’ll go with you,” Kent said, starting to get up.

I stopped him immediately. “You’ve been drinking, so you shouldn’t drive. Olive’s probably just hungry. You don’t have to tag along.”
Without waiting for them to respond, I grabbed my pre-packed bag and left.
Once in the car, I calmly watched the footage on my phone.
I’d left Olive at Mom’s house earlier and had arranged for Mom to call at the right timing. Everything was set. I just had to wait for them to take the bait.
