“We’re friends. There’s no subordinate hierarchy.”

Hendrick’s voice stayed level, but he could see where she was going. “My relationship with Timothy is different from yours.”

Cecelia studied him, something playful in her eyes. “Can you guarantee you and Timothy will be friends for life? This is the apocalypse. Timothy’s sense of responsibility toward the team is admirable—but it’s also a liability.

“Right now, your team is what, five people? To make it to Briar City, you’ll recruit along the way. New members follow the team leader. The day you and Timothy disagree on something, what happens then?”

“Are you trying to drive a wedge?”

Hendrick’s fox–eyes narrowed. A quiet sneer. “Whatever happens between Timothy and me isn’t really

your concern.”

“True enough.”

Cecelia waved a hand, unbothered. “Think of it however you want. I’m just being ‘kind‘ enough to offer a suggestion.”
