Chapter 126 The Crystal Race
Nobody spoke.
This was the gap between their team and Timothy’s.
They ran into mutated rats and died.
Timothy’s crew ran into mutated rats and slaughtered them.
“God, these things are disgusting!”
Ryan, post–rat–burning, was already cracking open skulls with his knife.
He pried out a crystal the size of a quail egg. White. Clean.
Miraculously, there wasn’t a drop of brain matter on it.
It just popped free from the base of the skull.
Hendrick bent down, picked it up, and glanced toward Cecelia.
Cecelia’s eyes narrowed. She said nothing.
But her expression said everything.
Hendrick absorbed the crystal on the spot. Sure enough, after a moment, the crystal turned transparent.
The energy had been completely drained.
It was exactly as Cecelia had said before; it only held about a tenth of the energy of a level 1 crystal.
But they made up for it in sheer numbers.
He told Ryan and Matthew, “Collect every crystal.”
Both nodded.
They didn’t care that Jayson’s people were watching. They moved fast.
“Thanks, Timothy.”
Jayson finally pulled himself together. He’d just stood up to thank Timothy when he noticed Hendrick’s team pulling quail–egg–sized objects out of the rat skulls.

His pupils tightened.
A guess formed. He needed confirmation from Timothy. “What are those? What are they for?”
“You already heard about this from Jerome, didn’t you?”
Timothy’s counter.
Jayson’s eyes went wide. “You mean these things from the rats‘ brains abilities?”
“Yes.”
Timothy’s voice was flat. No games.
Realistically, crystals weren’t going to stay a secret forever.
No point hiding it.

Outside of internal team distribution, between teams, it was finders–keepers.
Anyone who found out and could kill a mutated zombie or beast for a crystal–that was their own skill.
“It’s real…”
Jayson’s eyes flicked toward Jerome’s car.
Had he been wrong about Jerome?
He shoved the thought away immediately.
intless now. The bridge was burned.
Jerome had offered nothing else to the team. Cutting him loose was still the right call.
Jayson ordered Randy and Cillian to go search the already–dead rats for leftover crystals.
“Jayson … these ones are all hollowed out. No ‘quail eggs‘ left.”
It was a bit awkward.
Meanwhile, Hendrick’s group had already bagged their haul and handed the satchel to Timothy.
Jayson pivoted immediately. “Timothy, could I borrow one crystal? Just to try?”

One rat crystal wasn’t precious enough to refuse.
Timothy handed one over.
Jayson held it like it was gold. He asked Timothy how to use it.
Timothy gave him the quick version. Jayson started absorbing on the
spot.

Moments later, Randy was practically vibrating. “Jayson, well? How is it?”
