Hendrick scanned the surroundings. “No sign of the cat anywhere. Is it hiding? Waiting to deliver the killing blow? Or did it lose and get eaten by the mutated snake?”

Hendrick stared at the twitching wreck. His mouth twitched. “That’s … profoundly unlucky.”

Cecelia studied the snake’s reactions.

Her gaze locked onto its gaping mouth.

Aside from the broken fang, there were two others deeper inside.

There were four fangs in total.

Each one thick as a spoon handle, dripping venom and black blood.

Cecelia checked the perimeter. No more rats beyond the few that had emerged earlier.

There was no sign of the cat.
